Russia's military has fired a hypersonic ballistic missile and destroyed a big underground arms depot in western Ukraine, the defence ministry in Moscow has said.

If confirmed it would be Russia's first use in this war of the Kinzhal, or Dagger, ballistic missile launched from the air, most likely by a MiG-31 warplane.

The statistics are impressive: according to Russian officials the Kinzhal can hit a target up to 2,000km (1,240 miles) away and can fly faster than 6,000 km/h.

6000km/h is still slower than the speed of Voyager I or II?
Am I right?

6000 mph is a mere 1.66 km/s, which doesn't even quite meet the
definition of hypersonic at sea level. Voyager I is moving away from
the Sun at 17 km/s (and slowing).

In this context, it is defined as Mach 5 or higher. So 1.7 km/s at sea
level.

Mach 5 at sea level is 5 x 343 m/s, or 1.7 km/s. You can convert that
into whatever units you like.

The missile could have been a hypersonic missile - one capable of hypersonic
speed - but because it was launched at a short-range target in the Ukraine,
instead of at the United States, it didn't happen to get up to full speed this time.
