A planetary transit is part of a large process that can be neatly summarised by different imaging stages. Take Venus, for example.

That represents the full circuit of Venus from July 2010 to January 2012 with special attention to the gap as Venus passes between the slower moving Earth and central Sun.

The next sequence is time lapse when the gap is made smaller using a satellite with its camera fixed to the stationary Sun-

The slower moving Earth is represented by the change in position of the stars from left to right of the stationary/central Sun.
