Smitch, the spacecraft can "orbit" the point with some stationkeeping.
The points are technically unstable but stationkeeping keeps them in
place for the life of the mission.

Smitch, do you know that there have been spacecraft sent to L2 already?
Three have completed their missions and have been moved away from L2,
three others left L2 to complete their missions elsewhere. The Gaia
Space Observatory is currently operating at L2.

We' will see. If Webb does orbit the Moon it will fall
to its surface...

na, Webb is going to L2, and do a small orbit around L2

I don't know if this is mentioned anywhere in the literature,
but I suspect that the need for stationkeeping makes L2
attractive as a location. In space, last year's candy
wrappers, and last decade's, and last century's all
hang around forever -- unless their orbit carries them away.

You don't want any crap hanging around an observatory.
This is why, in the past, we've put them on remote
mountaintops.

At L2, by default, stuff floats away. So the observatory stays
and anything else we affirmatively keep stays, but
anything else, the crap, floats away.

I would dearly love it if the reason NASA picked a
mountaintop that remote is that they want the Webb
to continue to be remote throughout its lifespan,
as human civilization moves into space.

The Hubble is thirty years old. Will we see
space elevators and orbital colonies by 2050?
It's too bad about the crap we (hypothetically) will
put into our neighborhood orbit. One the other hand,
YeeeeHAH!

The main attractions of mountaintops are: 1) Less atmosphere between the
telescope and what you're looking at, and 2) Less light pollution. But
those are pretty much the same thing.

Good point. No natural crap there, either.
