Why bother with pedals, don't they just get in the way?

Seen it about the internet, I assume the biggest market is EMTB and I do
wonder about the shaft and it’s interactions with the suspension, as it is
on an analog MTB the suspension will alter In performance depending on gear
on/off saddle and so on.

Might fit better with cargo bikes and similar? Ie rigid frames? And still
high value bikes.

They address that:
"the drive shaft would need to grow and shrink in length to accommodate any changes in rear-center length. Likely, the chain-driven system would find its way onto such bikes before this Direct Drive option."

Seems to me as long as the suspension motion follows an arc around the bottom bracket all they would need is a U-joint.

Prior art is a sliding spline shaft section such that preset
gear lash doesn't change with changes in drive-to-hub distance.

Nothing like that was shown in the drawing but I assume
they'll adopt one as soon as they go on a test ride.

I've mentioned before that among the all-time best riding
(and snappy looking) bikes I have ever ridden was a 1913
Pope Columbia shaft drive fixed in green cromovelato. Owner
noted that gear lash adjustment was an annoying aspect of
actually riding it

More how will the suspension work with it, ie will it firm up like a
Derailleur system, ie how much of what the drive chain is doing will
feedback into the suspension?
