The neighbor just dropped off his dad's bike he has had in storage the past 12 years. His dad died 12 years ago and it has been completely in storage not used. A 2008 Lemond Zurich with 853 Reynolds frame. It is my size too at 59cm. Has the Rolf wheels and is in incredible shape. Not new but the paint and frame it beautiful. I like the yellow/blue.

So bike needs the works. it has 9 spd drivetrain. Appears the front shifter is fine but the rear shifter seems to need attention. Hopefully new cables/housing and a WD40 flush if it does not want to come to life will get it working. Otherwise I assume i can find something that will work. The tires are even the kind I used to use. Vredestein Tri comps with yellow sidewalls. They look pretty darn good and no real wear. I pump them up and they held air so maybe just use them is my thinking? New cable, housing all the way around a real old school type tune up. All exposed easy to replace cables and not a lot of housing to use. Check the hubs but what would they need if they spin fine?

This is going to be fun tune up and I might just have to take it out for a longer than normal ride check when I am done. I also can use the cash not getting a lot of work lately.

Anything you all might consider on something like this. I want to get it spinning great. Chain check for sure.
Deacon Mark

If the wheels need truing, take it to a professional. The Rolf wheels are notoriously difficult to work on. If the wheels are the "Comp" model you may notice no spoke nipples - the spokes are tightened by a nut under the rim tape. Rolf used to make a special thin-walled nut driver as the openings are too small to fit a normal nut driver or socket. Otherwise you'll have to search for a thin-walled socket. Also, the spoke tension is incredibly high.. Since the bike was stored for so long you might not have any issues, but an older well-used wheel may tend to snap spokes because the spoke nut may be corroded enough to twist the spoke rather than tighten it.

My anecdote - I had a well-used set of Rolf Vector Pro wheels (~2002) that I had snapped a spoke when trying to true it (I have thin-walled sockets). Replacement spokes were only available though authorized Rolf/Trek dealers, so I took it to a local shop that had been in business for over 50 years at the time and catered to high-end machines as well as being co sponsor of a team I rode for (Gooddale's, Nashua NH). It was run by Ron Bingham, arguably one of the best mechanics outside of the Boston area (now retired). I decided to just let them deal with it, so I left the wheel. Two weeks later I went back to the shop to pick up the wheel. Ron came out of the back with the repaired wheel, enough extra spokes to rebuild the wheel, and the Rolf nutdriver. He said it was the worst wheel he had ever worked on, just charged me for the repair, gave me the extra spokes and the driver for free, and told me not to bring the wheel back.

Yes, Ron was a true gem in the industry, as well as a true gentleman who watched out for his clientele. True story: In the early 2000's I was racing a Devinci Road frame. My team had purchased a few of them for us in team colors. I sold the bike in about 2005 to a co worker (with the Vector Pro wheelset) who happened to live in Nashua. He wasn't very mechanically inclined, and ended up taking it to Gooddales for a tune up. Ron recognized the bike, having seen me on it many times, and called me to ask if it was legit.

Gooddales had a great backstory, about how the last independent owner started working in the shop at 16 and ended up taking over the business:

Hopefully new cables/housing and a WD40 flush if it does not want to come to life will get it working. Otherwise I assume i can find something that will work. The tires are even the kind I used to use. Vredestein Tri comps with yellow sidewalls. They look pretty darn good and no real wear. I pump them up and they held air so maybe just use them is my thinking? New cable, housing all the way around a real old school type tune up. All exposed easy to replace cables and not a lot of housing to use. Check the hubs but what would they need if they spin fine?

If the wheels are the "Comp" model you may notice no spoke nipples - the spokes are tightened by a nut under the rim tape. Rolf used to make a special thin-walled nut driver as the openings are too small to fit a normal nut driver or socket. Otherwise you'll have to search for a thin-walled socket. Also, the spoke tension is incredibly high. Since the bike was stored for so long you might not have any issues, but an older well-used wheel may tend to snap spokes because the spoke nut may be corroded enough to twist the spoke rather than tighten it.

Campy made a wheel that used that same tool and I have one in the toolbox. It was a tubeless rim of all things and you had to use that clear sealant tape and it would leak a little for the first couple of days until all of the tiny leaks in the tape filled up. I believe that there were some Chinese carbon wheels that used that same inner/outer nipple but they were aluminum so you didn't dare try to use the outer end of the nipple.
