He needs to be let go (even if tenured) so that he can try his hand at being a professional comedian.

The joke is that there are people who have lifestyles, reputations and careers by appearing to go to work every day while literally doing nothing other than maintaining a self-aggrandising community with no interest in solar system or Universe research. Having no interest in money beyond what is necessary, I cannot imagine what it must take to convince oneself that they are taking part in anything creative and productive while drawing a salary because it amounts to a lucrative hobby and not a vocation.

If just a few of those researchers had the smallest curiosity and interest in observations and interpretation, astronomy would be a thriving community with genuine insights to enjoy and appreciate instead of a cistern of voodoo merchant who think too much of themselves to be of any use to society.

If the scientist in question had been doing his actual job, then more people WOULD know about science.

I believe you're confusing the job duties of a scientist with those
of an educator. Which says far more about you than it does about
scientists or educators.

Nope, YOU are mistaken. Scientists are primarily trained and paid by educational institutions and governments. They need to earn their keep.

Don't blame the public for the poor job that scientists are doing to educate.

So are janitors. Are you claiming they are educators, too?
Probably.

If they earn their keep educating, they become educators. They may
*also* be scientists, at the same time, but they are still
different jobs.

I don't blame the public for scientists doing a poor job at
something that _not their job_. The blame for a poor job of
educating the public lies with educators, which is a different job
than scientist.

You are wrong on all counts.
Janitors are paid to clean buildings.
Educators are paid to educate.
Scientists are also paid to educate.
If scientists make discoveries, they must (eventually, and sooner rather than later) share those with the world and explain what they are doing, both to other scientists and to everyone else. That would be called education.

I know you are, but what am I?

> Janitors are paid to clean buildings.

Scientists are paid to do science.

Educators are paid to educate.

These are different functions.

Some people perform both.

Many perform neither.

And some perform one, but not the other.

> Educators are paid to educate.
> Scientists are also paid to educate.

Only if they are also educators. Your delusion appears to be that
*all* scientists are, *inherently*, also educators.

You are mistaken. To the point of being full of shit.

> If scientists make discoveries, they must (eventually, and
> sooner rather than later) share those with the world and explain
> what they are doing, both to other scientists and to everyone
> else. That would be called education.

You do not know what science *is*, obviously. Share them with the
scientific community, perhaps, in that it needs to be published for
peer review.

That is *not* educating the public at large, a task many scientists
are very ill equipped to perform. And have no interest in.

Many scientists also work in private industry, where they do
research in the interests of the employer. Many of them are bound
by NDAs that specifically prohibit them from publishing without
permission. They're still doing science, and thus, still
scientists.

You are wrong, and you know you're wrong, but too childish and weak
to admit it. You said something stupid, and getting called out on
it smarts. Get used to it. It will happen a *lot* to you, because
you are stupid.

you know you can't dispute any of it.

Terry Austin is rude and annoying. That doesn't prevent him from being right.

It is true that one of the jobs of a *professor* is to educate. And many of our best
scientists are tenured professors at colleges and universities.

However, the job of a scientist working for IBM or Bell Labs is to do research,
not necessarily to educate anyone.

And a professor's job is to educate *his students*. Students studying science
in the university he works at. That's not the same as educating the public.

That's why we only have a *few* people like Carl Sagan and Neil de Grasse Tyson.

Educating the public _was_ their job. But they got paid for doing that job by TV
stations and publishers. Although, to be fair, Neil de Grasse Tyson's job was to
educate the public even before he became a celebrity, since he was the director
of a planetarium.

However, while what I've said so far claims that you're wrong, I have to acknowledge
that in another sense you're right. After all, while educating the public may not be
part of a scientist's "job", in the sense of that for which he gets a paycheck, there is
also that thing called "civic duty".

And in that sense, scientists _do_ have a civic duty to make efforts in the direction
of achieving a more scientifically-literate American public, and the need for this has
perhaps never been more urgent.

I am not at all sure, though, that you are of the political persuasion that will appreciate
the results if they do more consicientiously practise this civic duty, and doing so
bears fruit.

Couldn't the blame for a poor job of educating the public lie with
_politicians_ who cut budgets for schools, or pass laws preventing
teachers from teaching the truth?

I mean, sure, if the nation's teachers were slacking off, it would
cause a problem, but there _is_ plenty of visible evidence in
favor of the alternative explanation that I've noted.

Both of whom stopped being scientists when they became celebrities.

No more so than the public's civic duty to educate themselves,
especially on isses they're *voting* on.

But, being a fascist lefty, whose masters cannot survive, much less
strive, with an educated public, you'll ignore that.

And the public who elected them.

But the primary repsonsibility for a poor job of educating is with
people whose *job* is, in fact, educating.

There's far more evidence of institutional bias in the training of
teachers, that leads public (and many private) schools to being
nothing more than fascist lefty indoctrination camps.

Except that he isn't right.

And the crap of yours that I just edited out is also wrong.

A PhD (in science) who works for a large company is not necessarily a scientist, any more than a PhD who drives a cab.

Go learn what a scientist actual is, before crapping on anything else that I say.

BTW, YOU are rude and annoying.

Go learn what a scientist actually is, before crapping on anything else that I say.

BTW, YOU are rude and annoying.
