There are other reasons to be concerned about the resale value of
a telescope.

If one is going to use a telescope for years, but then trade up someday
after one has some more money saved, resale value will help.

But the resale value of a telescope also tells something about it: what
is its quality, how long is it expected to last? What kind of a reputation
has it earned?

There are people who will spend thousands for a little Questar, which
performs no better than a dozen no name Chinese brands. There are
people who will spend three times more for equipment to get a 2% boost
in performance. There are all kinds of reasons that different people
choose different equipment. Which is just fine. Rich's obsession with
how other people choose to spend their own money, as well as his
assumptions about what may or may not actually be high quality, is
tiresome.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, l was more inclined to see his bashing of
cheap Chinese-made telescopes as serving a useful purpose, rather than

Maybe many other things he has written here are in that category, but here
he just said the plain truth. Xi Jinping, the evil tyrant of the repressive, totalitarian
communist regime of the Chinese mainland, does not have any right to limit
the relations between the United States and the Republic of China in Taiwan.

Of course, from a practical standpoint, instead of a moral standpoint, one has
to take the mainland regime's position into account because it has nukes.

But we don't have to like it, or pretend that we do.

It is puzzling to me why some people seem to think that "strategic ambiguity" is preferable to
an unequivocal commitment to the defense of Taiwan.
After all, we might defend Taiwan if it is attacked. And China might attack Taiwan _if_ it thinks we
won't defend it. Since defending Taiwan might start a nuclear World War III, therefore, surely it
is best if it is very clear that it will be defended if it is attacked... so that no attack will ever take
place.

Actually, let's all just move our Chinese embassies to Taipei from Beijing, where they used to be
before Trudeau and Nixon got their bright ideas. And have the UN go back to the status quo ante
as well - or the U.S. can just leave the existing UN and start a new one.
