It is not like the US spends much on NASA to begin with...

Trees will eventually block your view of Mars, along with other objects that tend to inhabit the southern part of the sky.

Money invested in primary scientific research has always been a good
investment. It has always returned far more than it cost. In every
field.

Yeah, taking from one to pay for the other if false economy.
Scientific research is an investment with positive returns. We could
be spending more and making more. And money invested in climate change
mitigation reduces the costs we will incur in the future, so also
needs to be viewed as a positive investment, where the more we spend
now, the greater our returns.

And it's not like we don't have the public resources to make those
investments.

You are too logical, that's your problem!
What is money, which created from thin air, but controls everything?

1) Being logical is not a problem. It helps one find correct answers to
questions, and correct solutions to problems.

2) Money may be an abstraction. Hard work is not. Physical resources,
like water, energy, wood, metals and food are not. So that people can
effectively exchange these valuable items in a convenient manner,
exchanging what they have, but do not need, for what they need, we
invented money. So the fact that money _is_ an invention doesn't mean
it's... less real.
