How much food do astronauts take to space?
The space shuttle carries about 3.8 pounds of food, including 1 pound of packaging, per astronaut for each day of the mission. The astronauts get three meals a day, plus snacks. A back-up Safe Haven food system provides an extra 2,000 calories per day, per astronaut.

How much water does a person need in space?
Each astronaut can use about 4.4 liters of water per day.

Musk said, his rocket can transport 1000 people.
Multiply all this food and water by 1000 person plus 365 days travel to Mars.
equal 1387000 lb of food and 1606000 liters of water, means 2190000 lb of extra weight plus the weight of 1000 people.
It has to be a big-big rocket!
