One of the things that the manufacturers of electronic groups failed to consider is that it makes it breathtakingly easy to mix and match parts by third parties. While it requires a very large number of parts specifically made for manual shifting, all it takes is a programmed microprocessor for electronic groups. It can also be programmed to go through each component and recognize the via the communications protocol, which part it is and from whom.

The result of this is that electronic component prices will likely go down.

What is the difference between a Dura Ace Di2 hand lever and an Ultegra? The color. I haven't seen the 105 but it is likely to be the same. Campagnolo makes every effort to be different - but what if a rear derailleur is cheaper than that of someone else? Programming is not something that is difficult to do and I could easily break the encoding down which appears to have been done with this device.

It's all about risk vs reward.. risk, in this case, being mostly
economical. I thought the trigger shifters would be enough of an
improvement to justify the cost.. which wasn't that much.

Not so, the electric shifters

Why on earth would a component manufacturer do that? These are businesses you know.

I'm not clear what you mean? If it is about the levers - there is nothing there. It is a plastic casting and two electric switches. How to you make that any lighter or in some manner superior? The bar clamp is the only possible place to save weight and at best it would be calculated in the one digit grams weight.
