There seems to be ample evidence that we are adapted to the water; being
IN and UNDER the water as much as walking along it, exploiting it.

In a non-linear model of evolution, aquatic adaptations might've been
vestigial -- perhaps arising, falling out of use only to be exploited once
again. I've often felt that this was the case with powered flight in birds.

We do have flightless birds, don't we? So the only piece missing is for
one of them to re evolve flight! I personally can't see how this didn't
happen. The first hint would be Opposite Birds opening things to separate
lineages. Another issue is that dinosaurs were all just kind of flightless
birds or pterosaurs from the get-go. At least some dinosaurs. So maybe
the secret all along wasn't a slow, linear refinement but an evolutionary
need to reboot, which the Opposite Birds kind of fit into...

Can be true for "Aquatic Ape."

Maybe adaptations in monkeys rose to prominence again, were built
upon and then slipped into disuse... only to remain vestigially before
arising again, being built on, perhaps slipping once more into disuse...

The point is, there doesn't seem to be a ceiling on "Aquatic Ape," how
far back it might've gone.

Excellent. Mind you, this is, a kind of, picking up job, you pick up
your food. With our hands, we are equipped to do just that. It is much

Various African rainforest monkeys submerge to seek sunken nuts just as they seek fallen nuts & fruits. Homo did the same. No doubt consuming crustaceans like consuming grubs as well.

Here we report on a fossil freshwater shell assemblage from the Hauptknochenschicht (HPS "main bone layer", type locality of H.erectus, discovered by Eugene Dubois in 1891).
In the Dubois collection (Naturalis mus. Leiden, NL) we found
- evidence for freshwater shellfish consumption by hominins,
- 1 unambiguous shell tool,
- a shell with a geometric engraving.
We dated sediment contained in the shells (40/39Ar & luminescence dating):
- max.age 0.54 Ma ± 0.10,
- min.age 0.43 Ma ± 0.05:
the Trinil HKS is younger than previously estimated.
Our data indicate:
- the engraving was made by H.erectus,
- it is considerably older than the oldest geometric engravings described so far.
At present, it is not possible to assess the function or meaning of the engraved shell,
but this discovery suggests that engraving abstract patterns was in the realm of Asian H.erectus cognition & neuromotor control.
But yes, the paper shows that H.erectus on Java 0.5 Ma spent a lot of time outside the water.

For years & years & years dinosaur paleontologists barked at non
existent "Arboreal" features. What it came down to is that they
saw a feather and imagined all kinds of nonsense, because WE

The monkeys here point towards the same model for Aquatic Ape.

It didn't take magic, it maybe took a little necessity. And maybe it
had to happen more than once. That's my pet theory; They are
driven to this new thing out of necessity, maybe pick up some
beneficial refinements ala micro evolution and then leave it all
behind when the necessity ends:

Diving for food during a horrible drought, go back to the fruit &
nuts when the drought is over... adaptation remains because,
why not? Without a reason to go away they stay put. AND THEN
eventually there's another event that drives them to the water,
the build on those adaptations some more...

Yeah I think that's the more likely model. Maybe starting Loooong
before anything looking like an ape we had populations taking to
the water. There weren't massive changes because there didn't
need to be any. Period.

You mean, "...erectus and its ancestors..."? We don't know where from
Homo came, we don't have fossils of its ancestors.

Yes, exactly. Before, it was warmer, and the whole world was forested.
This means two things, first, there wasn't a food on the ground (except
what fell down from canopy), and, there were much more flooded areas.
But, at the banks of rivers/lakes/swamps, there was vegetation, since,
there, sun reached ground. Also, shallow swamps allowed sedge. So, this
was the food.
So, the life on the ground actually was very much living in water. So,
animals in water don't have antlers (they cannot use them for fight),
but they did have long canines (in water fight is head to head).
Of course, sabre-toothed cats chased prey in water.
Everything fits so well into my scenario.
Of course, there was a problem with swimming in salty water, because
salt crystals damage fur. This is why we do have all those swimmers in
Borneo, but not in Sulawesi.

Good article. The larger the ruminant, the less likely it will submerge in tropical water due to large crocs, but mousedeer don't dive in deep murky water unless necessary. Hippos are exceptions, but retain huge tusks that can sever a croc and a fast temper.
