Hi there,

I just got a brand-new bike with a 1*9 drivetrain. and a KMC Z9 chain.
When I reverse the movement of the pedals backwards I hear a high clicking sound coming out of the wide teeth of the chainring when they engage the chain links at the lower part of it . Is that normal? And how to fix it if it is not?!

Appreciate your advise in advance. and thank you guys!

Ahmed.

In all likelihood this sounds like a slight misalignment of the front derailleur. If this is the case you will find that it disappears in some gears. But 9 seeds is a good group that is fairly easy to align with the downtube adjuster.

All derailleur systems make noise (or worse) when
backpedaling, some more, some less, some a lot more.

Unless you have some other symptom or problem just stop
backpedaling and go ride!

1x9 do not have a front changer.

I missed that. How the hell do you ride a 1 x 9 on anything other than perfectly flat ground?

I cranked up several 7%+ grades a few days ago on 53/36. I have a 599
drive wheel and I admit had they been any longer than several hundred
feet, I'd have stopped and downshifted. Yes, I can do that on the
Catrike, but it'd have been nasty getting going again. I'd have
probably gone all the way down to the 30T. There's a long uphill on
that stretch where there's a couple of 8% segments where I opted for
the 30T from the start.

I'm a masher, not a spinner.

It's 2023; everything's special and nothing works with
anything else.

I wonder what's going to happen to all these "innovative" bikes in, say,
five or ten years when their "special" bits are worn out.

My commute bike is that, it’s a heavily old lump as well, mainly due to the
panniers and so on. But it’s perfectly comfortable up to 5% doable even in
double digits though gets less comfortable or rather harder work.

It’s parts not bikes, so I guess have to swap to different parts if said
company has gone out of business, be more that it (cassette) would be gappy
and possibly sub par shifting.

Derailleur do seem to last decades if not indefinitely, unless they take
physical damage.

I do get that your range with 9s isn’t huge hence 1by being more doable
with 11/12/13s systems be they road or MTB.

My old MTB with its 11-32 does spin out downhill, and it’s stiff on on some
of the steeper ramps if I pass though Richmond Park say. But for such a
bike it’s fine.
