Tobias understood people needed freshwater nearby. Some mermaids don't agree.

Grow up, DD, Tobias was a lot smarter than you are, and so is David Attenborough & most intelligent PAs.
It's really not difficult:
comparative biology clearly shows:
- Early-Pleistocene archaic Homo, e.g. H.erectus, were predom.shallow-diving, mostly for shellfish,
google "coastal dispersal Pleistocene Homo PPT".
- From the coasts, different populations in different continents then followed rivers/lakes inlands, probably seasonally initially,
as IMO was still the case for H.neanderthalensis.
- Late-Pleistocene H.sapiens: predom.wading bipedally in fresh water (plant & animal foods) -> walking on land.

Ceterum censeo:
only complete idiots still believe their Pleistocene ancestors ran antelopes to exhaustion.

Oh my, I forgot the murky monkey, sorry.

Tobias understood people needed freshwater nearby.
Some mermaids and the murky monkey don't think freshwater (or constructed shelter) was significant.

*Many* animal species need freashwater nearby. Predators find them to be
great for hunting.

Yes. But Homo evolved a further behavior: communal portable ground shelter construction, not in water, not in littoral zone, not at waterside, but typically within 50m of freshwater but not crocs.
