I have a similar problem with YouTube. I don't see any Spanish
language advertisements, but almost all of the actors in the
advertisements are black. In the distant past, the YouTube algorithm
probably decided that I was black or possible preferred black. I
asked YouTube support where the preferred ethnic settings were
located. They were initially confused but then guessed that it might
be buried in the "advertising preferences".
<https://myadcenter.google.com/customize>
Nothing found except alcohol, dating, gambling, pregnancy, and weight
loss. Of course, the decisions of the algorithm are final so this
remains unchanged, probably forever.

Tom... looks like your Spanish YouTube advertising might also be
permanent. It might be easier for you to learn Spanish than to have
Google change their algorithm.

If you mean the adverts that are shown on you tube before the main
feature is shown? Here they are in Thai, so, I'm guessing, the
location where you are may be the governing factor.

Maybe Tom lives in a largely Spanish district/town/village?

My wife is a youtube fanatic, but I don't the patience to sit and
watch them. I prefer books.

I've always preferred printed matter as you can read it, think about
it for a while and then reread it.

Yes, and with printed material, you can easily skip over anything you
already know or don't think is important.

I often have a hard time getting involved in TV shows or movies and
I'm often looking past the story being portrayed and thinking about
the actors and how stupid they must feel pretending to be what they
are not.

And with a lot of the you tube - "I'm gonna show you how to do it"
films there is this, "You don't know what you are talking about"
sensation :-)

Can’t say I do get either Spanish mind you I pay for YouTube premium mainly
as the adverts and such short form videos tend to do a number on my
somewhat broken vestibular system and trigger vertigo and other less fun
stuff!

As I watch a number of cycling stuff, the presenters are predominately
white and male.

If you watch any other video on any other topic it seems to attempt to
display more! Ie it’s rather simplistic

I'd run into the Park Tools instructional videos, so when I began my
wheel rebuild, I found their Youtube on spoke placement. It was very
long-winded, so I fast-forwarded through it, stopping or backing up to
write down the important steps.

I have the same problems with most youtube instructional videos as I
do with classrooms and teachers in general. They interfere with my
learning process, which is trial and error.

If I can't solve a problem I'll find a book or ask questions. Once I
get an except able answer from someone whose opinions I trust, I'll
resume my trial and error. I have no time for anyone who tries to tell
me what they think I should know. I'll decide that for myself.

For instructions I’ve never found videos useful, books are much easier.

For entertainment or general knowledge ie histories or similar video works
but for learning personally not so much.

Written material has served me well, for well over 70 years.
Audio-visual, not so much, unless it's old movies. For some reason, I
prefer black and white, and even old silent films.

That's possible, but unlikely.
<https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/santa-cruz/demographics>
60.8% White
21.1% Hispanic, Latino, etc
10.6% Asian
1.8% Black

I'm not very familiar with the local demographics, but I don't know of
any local area that is predominantly black. However, that might be
causing Tom's Spanish problem. For San Leandro CA:
<https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/san-leandro/demographics>
34.2% Asian
27.6% Hispanic, Latino, etc
21.4% White
9.7% Black
Tom should be seeing Asian adverisements if the algorithm is based on
demographics.

It's possible that YouTube might be using the location of the ISP
instead of my house. IP Geolocation sites have me located in San
Francisco, Scotts Valley, Boulder Creek, etc. This site queries 8 IP
Geolocation services:
<https://www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup?query=67.180.94.177>
I haven't spent much time trying to determine the cause. I fast
forward through the advertising anyway, so it doesn't bother me. I
should try different Comcast user logins, IP addresses, locations, and
ISP's and see if I can find a pattern. (Yet another project that I
don't need).

I started out with books. When I discovered that most of the books
were out of date, I switched to trade journals. I used to have
bookshelves full of mostly electronic trade journals and soft cover
publications. I "clipped" many of the articles and saved them in an
overloaded file cabinet. When YouTube arrived in 2005, I watched what
I could at DSL rates (1.5Mbit/sec). What got my attention was that
videos provided the details for analyzing, building, using and
repairing much of the electronics that I was dealing with at the time.
There were no books and few magazines that did this. I soon became
addicted to YouTube and spent far too much time watching "tech"
videos. As content, connectivity and speed improved, I started
watching videos on other topics. Besides YouTube, I subscribe to
Nebula TV and Curiosity Stream (because they are cheap).

With YouTube, I don't sit in a chair and stare at the computer or 32"
LCD TV screen. I walk around, cook dinner, eat, and work on other
things while YouTube is playing in the background. Multitasking, I
guess. If I hear something interesting, I stop the stream, backup a
few minutes, and pay attention to whatever I missed.

Some here brag "I'm a real man! I don't need no teacher! I learn on my
own by reading books!"

Apparently they haven't thought about how books get written, and by whom.

And if a person has never failed to understand something in a book, then
had their confusion allayed by asking someone a question, they must be
reading very simple material.

A Hip Hop slut wiggling her fat ass in a thong is not going to replace
Fred in a top hat with Ginger in a diaphanous gown, just because its

Indeed. That's always worked for me.

Reading a book allows for skipping over all the stuff you already know
or don't think you need to know.

Asking a question can address one issue and when one has a
satisfactory answer from a reliable source, one can get back to what
he was reading

I do believe that out resident bigot is imagining things once again.

After all, in the Great Gun Debate, right here on RBT, he either
didn't understand or refused to understand innumerable facts about the
use of forearms in homicides.

Written material is very different from classroom instruction in that
one can evaluate it, then approve or reject all of it or any part of
it at will, without have some instructor shoving his agenda into your
face.

It's called progress. When you junk the old stuff (because it's old)
and buy the "new" stuff for elevated prices :-)

Nope. There are cities and counties in the USA that are predominantly
black. However, I was looking at my *LOCAL* demographics (San
Francisco and Monterey Bay areas) on the assumption that if the
Comcast algorithm made a mistake in locating my house, the mistake
would likely be a local county. Badly IP Locating me in St Louis
Illinois, instead of California is possible, but highly unlikely.

I would guess(tm) that Comcast would locate me at the same address
that is on my billing information instead of being clever and using
location by IP address.

Thanks for trying.

You're a few weeks behind the times. In this day and age, books are
written by an AI (artifical intelligence):

"Books Written By Artificial Intelligence: A List"
<https://allgoodgreat.com/list-of-books-written-by-artificial-intelligence/>

"Focus: ChatGPT launches boom in AI-written e-books on Amazon"
<https://www.reuters.com/technology/chatgpt-launches-boom-ai-written-e-books-amazon-2023-02-21/>

Books can also be read by an AI, which then interprets the text in
accordance to a pre-programmed table of biases, distortions and
intentional misunderstandings, and then presents the interpretation to
the reader in pre-digested form. Hmmm... that's very close to what
Tom is doing by "interpreting" what he believes others in RBT have
written or said. Could Tom really be an advanced AI disguised as an
expert on everything?
