Interesting that they can find pigment but not even speculate on a source?

I would think that there are many natural dyes -- plants -- they could have
used. I remember, as a young kid, a neighbor's mom used to do weaving
and I'm talking totally from scratch! She'd buy the wool, spin it, dye it then
weave it...

Anyhow, I recall searching for plants she needed to make her dye.

Lng stry short: There are plants, berries and even stems that make good
dyes, though not all of them are very efficient.

UNRELATED: Southern soldiers during the civil war in their "Butternut"
uniforms... which was a simple dye you could make by throwing iron
into a bucket of water.

(Just ask anyone trying to wash out rust stains!)

Place in Nor Cal I worked at had spinning, weaving & natural dyeing of yarn, place smelled like rotting roots for a few weeks.
I don't know how to remove rust stains, I've got some naval jelly /phosphoric acid, might try that, works on some steel.
