Under the influence of Robert Moses (yes, THAT Robert Moses)
Portland ripped their expressway into a linear park,
followed a few years later by Multnomah County & Portland
freezing the built-up city limits, forcing any new housing
into a substantially longer commute through a 'green belt'
of undeveloped land. Once insulated geographically and
politically things went on rapidly in the same vein until...
here we are.

I don't think that we can blame this failure of a city on any one group but a consortium of far far leftists who fed off of each of their own failures as each "plan" made things progressively worse. Now even civilized cities and towns in Oregon are feeling the impact of the hard left and consequently the population of working people with common sense are leaving. I wonder what that lawyer who while having good sense himself was willing to make excuses for the communists has done with himself. In order for a law practice to make money it has to cater to people who HAVE money and for a large part of Oregon that is over.

I find it hard to blame a green belt for the decline of a city. My favourite city in all the world is Adelaide in Australia, which has a green belt. In Melbourne I lived on the green belt though that was superfluous as my square had its own private park. Even Johannesburg had a green belt, and Sydney too, sprawling unplanned cities, and in both I lived on the green belt. In all cases on the far side, looking into the city. None of these cities had any trouble with violence when I lived in them.* All the university towns I lived in were their own green belt though I liked the ones with a river best.

Err Green Belts don't appear to be limited to one area, they
apparently are a world wide phenomena. In fact they appear to date
back to at least the 7th century when Mohammed forbid cutting of trees
in a 12-mile-long strip around the city of Medina and in 1580
Elizabeth I of England banned new buildings in a 3-mile wide belt
around the City of London in an attempt to stop the spread of plague.
