It's going to be a lot easier to get into Canada starting October 1
2022. Virtually all limitations on who can enter in terms of Covid status.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-dropping-travel-mask-mandate-and-ending-covid-19-border-and-quarantine-restrictions-1.6084119

And of course they managed to delay this step until the END of the main
tourist season, meaning y'all will probably not come until mid-spring or
later anyway. Let's see how much of our tourist industry is still
functioning by spring....

Hey, you don't want to miss that! Besides, it gives you a chance to get
all the maple syrup you're going to need for a good long while :-)

Aren't you a cheerful guy!

I haven't seen the news story but I assume Rhino is talking about the
feds closing the CANPASS app which applies/applied to ANYBODY entering
Canada including citizens. It was unpopular and I'm not real
comfortable with anybody demanding additional documentation beyond my
passport which is why I haven't crossed any borders since Feb 2020
just before all hell broke loose.

With the price of gas in Vancouver now at $ 2.20 Cdn per liter (about
USD 6.25 per US gallon) - highest it's been since before the summer
and the distance to Ferndale, WA (cheapest gas prices in Whatcom Co.,
WA - being about 45 minutes away not counting border crossing time)
there's not really a huge urge to go. The deals in Ferndale and nearby
Bellingham aren't that great by comparison

While the Canadian government was allowing cellphone free people like
me to upload their data to a federal server, medicine is a provincial
matter in Canada so it could be done but a PITA (pain in the ***) and
the province of BC with their apps does seem hellbent on making
non-cellular types second class citizens.

During the last 3 months COVID has made the rounds of our family - my
son attended a course for work in Dallas, was exposed there, passed it
to his 5 month old baby on his return who then gave it to my daughter
(who lives with me) by sneezing in her face. I kept my distance from
her and stayed "negative" so all is sort of well. But I suppose Ottawa
would say I've been exposed. (Now all of the above individuals
including me except the baby have had all their shots but I'm not
going for a second booster till they have some they claim protects
from Omicron since in these parts that's what 97+% of new cases are)

Why not? I lived in Winnipeg for 4 years which is colder than most of
the inhabited portions of Alaska and for the last two years walked to
work every day including when it was -40. (Hint: most of Alaska
doesn't get anywhere near that cold in winter)

Yeah, when L.A. drops below 70 degrees, that's too cold for me.

I once crossed Portage Avenue (it's a 6 lane street in downtown
Winnipeg) in -35 wearing nothing heavier than a light sweater. I kept
my hands in my pockets, sheltered against the nearest building until
the light turned green then got myself indoors as quickly as I could.

Those were when I was doing tech support and one day arrived at work
with icicles hanging from my mustache and being told I had a support
call waiting for me. I asked the receptionist to stall them for a
minute to let me get my parka and scarves (note: plural) off so I
could at least see what I was doing before she transferred the call as
soon as I got to my desk in the basement.

Those icicles were formed during a 6 block walk in -35.....

[Don't get me wrong - Winnipeg is a wonderful city except in January
when the temperature is colder than the cold that defeated the Nazis
in front of Moscow in Dec 1941 - other than January it seldom goes
below -20C / -4 F. Unlike Ottawa nobody skates on the river as the
winds are too high to produce skateable ice]

I've heard that from friends that I have that live in the LA area. One
even grew up in Ohio but has been in Los Angeles for so long that he's
completely acclimated to the warm weather.

It's all what you are used to. I can do low 60s in a tee-shirt and
shorts but -35 (F or C) would call for some heavy bundling for me now.
We go from high 90s in the summer to some days with lows 20s (F) so I
can handle different temps, but even at the 20s I want to put on a
heavy jacket.

Actually I am NOT a native Winnipegger - I'm from Vancouver which most
Canadians consider the warmest major city in Canada - particularly in
January. (Nearby Victoria is warmer but most wouldn't consider a city
of 200k 'major' - unless they're in PEI which has a combined
population barely half that)

The new bivalent anti-omicron boosters aren't available in your neck of
the woods yet? (I'm behind on reading, as usual.)

The Moderna are - today's announcement from Ottawa was for the Pfizer
version. My doctor says no appreciable difference in effectiveness BUT
he also says those who have had an adverse reaction tend to be those
who have mixed (usually that means Pfizer / Moderna) vaccines. Since
I'm in the group "clinically extremely vulnerable" and have already
had 3 shots I'm being careful but have decided to wait for Pfizer
which is said to be available in the next 2-3 weeks.

Roger. May the Pfizer shipments be swift.

Obviously, milage varies, but all I had from the bivalent Pfizer was a
little arm soreness.

Whereas I've known several people (including my daughter) who had
severe side effects and she was the only one of our clan who "mixed
and matched".

Don't get me wrong - unlike my missus I DONT pay attention to websites
or day TV with pundits pontificating on all sorts of things with
little apparent knowledge - I've been getting my info from my
specialist (who I see every 1-3 months) who routinely does rounds in
the hospital that has been dedicated the main COVID reception hospital
in our metropolitan area. (He did rounds there before the pandemic so
this is mostly coincidental) His advice is that mixing vaccines
between Pfizer and Moderna makes little difference in terms of
protection but says that the literature he's read suggests fewer side
effects and lesser effects if one sticks to one or the other. It's NOT
a mindless 'brand loyalty'

My booster was last January so another couple weeks won't hurt.

I was laid up for months from the Moderna, got to fill out special forms
for the government (that Walgreens has right on hand so there’s obviously
need for them) and have been told to absolutely not take the boosters.

They are always worried about any bad reaction but the one they are
most worried about is the possible allergic reaction which is why they
want you to stick around for 15 minutes after getting a shot. It seems
like your body is trying to find new ways to take you out between
diabetes and allergies along with a bad reaction to the Covid vaccine.

What it did was put my diabetes into hyper drive. While I was sitting there
at the Walgreens for the waiting period my glucose alarm went off because
my blood sugars were already going through the roof. Over the next couple
days they got so high that they became unmeasurable. My ex had dragged me
down by the scruff of my neck and made me get the shot. The pharmacist said
that if I didn’t have somebody there to take me home they have called the
paramedics but they wouldn’t of let me leave on my own.

Not a reaction that I have heard of and it can't be common or they
would be warning everyone with diabetes before giving them a shot of
Moderna or Pfizer (I assume Pfizer could have a similar effect since
both are mRNA vaccines.)

I'm so sorry that happened. They told me to watch my numbers, but I
didn't suffer any ill effects from any of the shots.

For what it's worth, I mentioned I had been discussing this with a
"specialist" - I didn't say it previously but the doctor in question
is an endochrinolgist. He gave me no special instructions concerning
the various vaccines (other than to take them) and have personally had
no ill effects from any of my shots. And of course as mentioned to
answer what questions I had.

Oh it’s pretty damn common. They just don’t publicize it. Lots of people on
the CGM groups of reported it.
