I went shopping for Halloween candy today. The little bags of individual
snack size candies that were $2.50 last year are $7.59 this year.

Strangely enough, candy corn did not, but I am gvuessing they're still
selling bags from several years ago.

Yeah, potato chips have doubled, mini chocolate bars and tripled. According
to the political ads milk is up to $10 a bottle although I haven’t seen
that myself.

I don't get the way some products have gone up. It makes sense that
there would be some increase in prices given the increase in fuel
prices. That said the doubling and tripling of prices on some items
makes no sense other than the companies taking advantage of the
situation to increase their prices. I don't know about you but I
refuse to buy those products.

I stopped by the Oak Ridge supermarket this past Tuesday for a couple of things
and a gallon of whole milk cost me $4.09 while a quart of chocolate milk was
$3.59 but it's a small chain and I accept the higher prices, as I only shop there
on occasion for a few things I need without having to wait in line forever and
usually go to Meijers, where two weeks back I got a gallon of whole milk for
$3.03.

Checking Amazon groceries I see gallons of milk varying from $4.29 for a
plain Jane variety in a brand I’ve never heard of and up to $9.49 for a
gallon of organic ultra pasteurized.

All the half gallon options cost more than five dollars though.

Well, we are literally in the middle of a desert, without another real city
for 400 miles. So this stuff all has to be trucked in. I think that’s the
reason for the shortages we’ve been having the last couple of years. Why
sell half your load in Los Angeles and spend the money to truck the other
half of the load to Phoenix when you can just sell everything in Los
Angeles and let Phoenix starve?

The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it is still on my list.

When you're buying milk from Jeff Bezos's cows, you're going to pay a premium.

Could be. Certainly I've only seen the shortages you describe for very
short periods when the country was experiencing them. Now the only
issue might be if you come in during the evening when the stocks of
some items have been depleted. Come in the morning and only a few
items tend to be in short supply (like the cranberry squeeze things
have been in short supply for months so I assume that's a home
schooling issue.)

Though a good question would be is Las Vegas seeing the same sort of
shortages that you are having in Phoenix. We need someone to make the
trip to Vegas to check out the grocery stores. Any volunteers? Anyone?
Ferris?

We’ve never stopped having shortages since the big toilet paper debacle; we
just rotate what we can’t get.

This week we can’t get eggs or bottled water (Friends got me a Google pack
from Costco since the regular supermarkets didn’t have any) and soft drinks
are in very short supply. We haven’t been able to get certain kinds of deli
meats in a couple years.

But yesterday we had cream cheese again. That had been gone for the last
month or so. However I wanted ingredients to make ham sandwiches and they
were out of Oscar Meyer cold cuts, bread, Swiss cheese, and mustard. Which
pretty much left mayonnaise and I had that. French’s condiments have been
in short supply for a long time.

Walmart continues to ship me things like Lays potato chips from Reno or
Chino. Although the number of items they have marked as available for
shipping has decreased drastically.

What size of bottle is supposed to be $10? In our area a 4 litre
plastic jug goes for around $10 (Canadian) for organic (which is what
we get vs $6.50 for non-organic. That hasn't gone up that much during
the pandemic though plenty of other stuff has.

It’s gone up quite a bit and you can hardly ever get it.

I don’t know what size bottle they’re talking about in the political ads.
In the prices I looked up on Amazon and quoted here I’ve made sure
everything was a gallon except at the very end there when I mentioned half
gallon. I was surprised how many gallon alternatives were available because
we downsized to some thing weird like 3/5 of a gallon bottles some years
ago.

Anim is like Mr. Burns. He has every disease known to man, but they're all
perfectly in balance and cancel each other out.

I buy flavored seltzer and the price has remained steady for one brand
and actually gone down a few pennies on another brand.

Tyson frozen southern chicken breast tenderloins have had
sporadic availability ever since the Covid hit, sometimes I
can't find any for a couple of weeks so when it is available,
I'll buy all 6-8 bags in the freezer.

Our frozen wing section was literally decimated and Frank’s brand never did
come back. At one point they just closed the chicken section in the meat
department entirely and covered it over with translucent plastic like it
was a hazmat situation.

Oh yeah Atkins shakes which used to cost about six dollars for a four pack
has been creeping up. It had gotten to nine bucks and this week jumped to
12 bucks! So put those down as having doubled in the last year.
