Well in this case he was a yacht captain for one of the richest men in
Ireland which may or may not be considered 'working class' (this is my
mother's paternal grandfather, her maternal grandfather was a
carpenter who was one of those who built the Titanic so probably more
'working class' by your standards) He lost his yacht captain job in
1912, emigrated to Canada (with wife + seven children of whom my
grandfather was youngest), when war came felt it was his duty to
return to Britain (at his own expense) to take up his Royal Navy
reservist's commission - they gave him command of a minesweeper - and
at war's end returned to Canada. He had only been in Canada two years
which is why he presumably went back to the Admiralty in London to
take up his commission. After the war he took up commercial fishing
and made his one and only postwar trip to Britain for the 1937 Royal
Coronation (Edward VIII - which of course never occured) caught
pneumonia, died there and is buried in the same cemetary his parents
and siblings are in - I was there in 2016
