Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett is a Guardian columnist and author

The headline on this article was amended on 24 January 2023 to place greater emphasis on the column’s central argument

Reading is precious – which is why I’ve been giving away my books
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/23/reading-is-precious-but-the-cult-of-book-ownership-can-be-smug-and-middle-class

How many ebooks can 4gb DVD hold?

4 GB can store roughly 2100, considering every book is on an average 1.5 MB in size. Consider 1 MB size files, we get close to 3150 books.

5 terabyte HDD / 4 gigabytes = 1250

1250x2100= a quarter million books on a 5TB HDD

In a device the size of a pack of cigarettes

I have one of these 5TB HDD:

> In a device the size of a pack of cigarettes
> https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-External-Drive-WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN/dp/B07X41PWTY

plugged into a windows laptop. The laptop is plugged into my wifi router. The windows laptop is set up to file share with any device connected to the network.

I can watch movies, listen to music, and read ebooks on any device (tablet, smart TV, cell phone or laptop) in the house that shares the same wifi network.

File sharing in WINDOWS is easy to set up.

I don't need a bookshelf that covers a complete wall.

I can fit my library in my pocket.

Wow. I thought Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett might be well be the stupidest woman
alive (almost every one of her sentences is missing a key word) until I
read the article at the bottom, trying to get me to give them money and
realized that Arwa Mahdawi is a full magnitude more retard.

I can't quite make out if she is concerned that owning books will make
well-to-do people look merely middle class or if she is worried that
poor people owning books will make them look middle class and snooty. I
think it must be the latter but I could be wrong.

I don't know of anyone who boasts of having a large library of books
as though it makes them better. If it comes up I might mention having
a lot of books just because I like books and enjoy re-reading many of
them and being reminded of various stories when looking over them, but
I can't imagine thinking that other people are going to be impressed
by my collection. LOL. In some ways I can imagine otherwise as I do
have a good collection of books that are what many would consider
trash. Books that require you to turn off your brain and just enjoy
the ride but there are times when that is just what I want, much like
with movies because I'm not trying to impress anyone with my choices.
Instead I'm just making choices that I think will entertain me or
educate me.

I posted the URL to her column elsewhere. I read part of it but then got
annoyed and didn't read more. I think her complaint, which is STOOPID,
is that it's elitist to hang onto books that you've already read because
that keeps it out of the hands of those who can't afford to buy books.

I buy lots of used books just because they are cheap and I don't think
books should ever be trashed, so I appreciate the sentiment of passing
books along to subsequent readers.

But she could express that sentiment while keeping her stupid insults to
herself.

I loved this old bookstore that used to be in downtown Atlanta
(Buckhead area) that was shared with the main bookstore. The old one
only had used books for sale. Which was great as there were books that
you could never find elsewhere as they were long out of print. I
picked up books from the 40s/50s that I would never have known of
without that bookstore. Sadly it went out of business decades ago.

No, she couldn’t. She’s too stupid. Further down in the article she says
that when she needs to look up something in a copy of a book she’s throwing
away she buys a cheaper replacement copy like that makes her smart or
something. That’s how stupid she is; she thinks that makes her smart.
Apparently she’s unaware of libraries or the Internet.

For me, that was Al’s used bookstore on Van Buren. It was surrounded by
street walkers. And it smelled like the books were decaying. When we bought
them, we’d take them home and leave them sitting outside to air out (the
books not the streetwalkers). It was years later when we found out that the
big building across the street was the Arnolds pickles factory.

The fact that she reviews her books and throws the ones that upset her now
into the recycling bin told me how stupid she is.

Of course you wouldn't leave the streetwalkers outside. That's not why
you would bring them home. ;)

Since she didn't bring it up one has to wonder if she's even aware
that you can buy most books today in digital form. Now I know that
many prefer to have them in physical form and if your intent is to
just give them away the physical form is going to be the easiest for
that purpose, but still. If you don't want to have them cluttering up
your home going digital would seem to be the easiest option. As all of
the books would you own would still be readily available to you and,
as a bonus, easily searchable.

Maybe I'm missing something but how does looking "middle class and
snooty" (even if that were true which I highly doubt) make them
bigotted?

Me - while my parents had quite a few books (mostly Dad's old texts
from seminary) most of MY books were either picture books or from the
library which every 3-4 weeks my Mom faithfully drove my brother and I
to.

Agreed - I have a large library and have certain items I'm very proud
of owning (mostly first editions) but I've never pretended any of that
makes me a better person than those around me.

And who's to judge trash anyhow? I also have large drives and have
collected whole or nearly whole series I've enjoyed. I don't make them
available for download and rarely re-watch them (Yes I do have
Survivor season 5 on my hard drive and yes I'm aware they're past
season 40 now....) But then the cost of disk space is way down as well
- I once paid $70 for a box of 10 floppy disks (1979) whereas $160
these days will buy you an 8 tb hard drive...

I completely agree - in my student days I regularly turned up at
university book sales where you could often get treasures for $1
apiece.

As for "keeping them out of those who can't afford to buy books" the
public library does a far better job than I ever could though I have
told my kids NOT to give them my books when I go as they'll just sell
them off for $0.50 - 1.00 which I don't think benefits anybody and
certainly doesn't help build a better library. (Which in our area
seems to have been going heavily into non-book materials - videos,
comic books aka 'graphic novels', DVDs etc these last 5 years. Since
as we all know computers and DVD players cost a lot more than a book
does!)

I routinely take out from the library books from authors whose views
I know will upset me simply because I feel they have a right to
express their views and they're not required to agree with me.

It's called self-education.

And $35-40 will buy you a renewed 4TB Enterprise drive from Amazon.
(Yes, they are used but they are from data centers and so have little
actual use and will typically last for years.)

I have a full set of 1960s world book encyclopedias (as seen on Magnum PI)
and that makes me better than the dumb shit who wrote this article.

We do too and that's because my folks were taken in by a fast talking
salesman. Mom decided 2 months later a library was a cheaper ($450
cheaper which was a big deal in the mid-1960s) and more effective
choice.

Not sure if it was for my brother but certainly was for me.
