The past ten days have seen what could be the start of an historic turning point away from endless war in the Middle East. Public opinion in the United States, in harmony with the majority of people in the world, has clearly rejected U.S. military intervention in Syria.

But for this turn away from war to be complete and lasting, greater awareness is needed of the forces that have been pushing the United States into these wars, and will surely continue to do so until they are clearly and openly rejected.

An American friend who knows Washington well recently told us that “everybody” there knows that, as far as the drive to war with Syria is concerned, it is Israel that directs U.S. policy. Why then, we replied, don’t opponents of war say it out loud, since, if the American public knew that, support for the war would collapse? Of course, we knew the answer to that question. They are afraid to say all they know, because if you blame the pro-Israel lobby, you are branded an anti-Semite in the media and your career is destroyed.

co-worker prepare for her citizenship test back in
the late 1980s. (She was Polish, but her family had
come to the US when she was two years old.)

One question from the study questions was about the
Emancipation Proclamation. The official "correct" answer
was that it outlawed slavery in the US.

Funny. I was taught that it was the 13th Amendment to
the Constitution that outlawed slavery.

Yet according the the exam, if you had said that you
would have been marked wrong for that question. :/

So retconning history is not a new thing. I guess I wasn't
progressive enough back then to have gotten the memo that

Yeah, you run into that problem a lot when you actually know a lot about a
subject and take a test on it designed for people with only a surface
knowledge of the subject. You end up getting questions wrong because the
test itself isn't technically accurate.

I was forever frustrated by our yearly required online training for active
shooters. There was always a question that said, "If you find yourself in
an active shooter situation, you should:

(a) try and distract the shooter

(b) find a hiding place and call the police

(c) engage the shooter and try and disarm or kill him

The correct answer was C but the computer marked it wrong and said it was
B.

Except I *was* the police so the test was telling me I should hide and call
myself instead of doing what I was paid to do and deal with assholes who
are shooting up the place.

In describing AIPAC as using its financial muscle to intimidate politicians, he is repeating a charge that helped earn Walt and Mearsheimer (and more recently, Ilhan Omar) the label of antisemites.

Hmmmm. I'm seeing a trend here in various government-produced
exams.

I've taken several FCC exams for both commercial and
amateur radio licenses and they all seem to have one or
two questions and possible answers that make you go "what?"

On the amateur exams, okay, it's just a hobby, not a
job with critical performance criteria, but for the
commercial licenses, you're supposed to be able to work
on an actual radio transmitting station. I'd think trying
to play mind games with examinees would be counter-productive.

Lincoln was able to make slavery illegal DURING THE CIVIL WAR as he
confiscated the property of the enemy. Once the Civil War concluded,
the Emancipation Proclamation had no legal effect. The constitutional
amendment was required for peacetime.
