The house that served as the exterior for Buffy Summers' home in BtVS is
a mile or so from where I live. It's unrecognizable now because the
people who own it let the landscaping take over to the point where you
can barely see it from the street through all the vines and shrubs and
drooping branches. It looks like a house lost in a swamp or something.
They got sick of dozens of people a day pulling into their driveway,
blocking the street, and coming up onto the front lawn to take pictures.

The show itself was entirely filmed in a television studio. I recall no
on location scenes anywhere.

I know that the Fargo movie used locations in Minneapolis for scenes
that were both outside and inside, plus establishment shots.

The tv series was a US production in Canada based in Alberta. In
fact they used a studio in Calgary which I assume was built for the
production. Except Season 4, in which Chicago stood in for Kansas City. I
believe it used the television production studio in Chicago as well but
I don't recall.

I had to look it up: The one Chicago location I wasn't able to
identify, Joplin's Department Store, was Momence, Illinois, which is
well south and beyond the metropolitan area.

I doubt MTM tossed up her hat in the air on an L.A. street so it was
more than just "establishing shots" and would be easy to think it was
shot in Minn. because of the starting segment. Saying "Holy fuck are

Of course it was in Minneapolis. The department store behind Mary was
quite famous. BTW the old lady behind her, who looks a bit puzzled,
got her own national obit based solely on her appearance there. She
was known as "the And Lady" to many fans because her head appeared just
above that word in the creator credit.

I don't know what point you're trying to make, as this is Captain
Obvious stuff. If you're under the impression that I thought the MTM
series was shot in Minneapolis, you're wrong. IIRC MTM herself was
there in 1969 or 1970 to shoot some exteriors, and not again until 1989
for a TV Land gala.

I never challenged that, I was just saying that the exterior shot of the
house where Mary lived was a house in a Minneapolis neighborhood.

It is entirely possible that the owners of the house were bothered by
strangers (some who didn't know better, some jokesters who did) just
from the stock footage of the house's exterior that was used over and
over -- regardless of whether or not the interior scenes were filmed
there (which they weren't).

I don't suppose there's another house that could surpass Mary's original
house in '70s TV lore other than The Brady Bunch house (where interior
filming actually took place as I understand).

Not sure how filming could have taken place there since the interior as
portrayed on the show was physically impossible to put in that house.

There was a reality show a few years back which tracked the renovation
of the Brady Bunch house whose owners wanted to make the inside match
what was seen on screen and they couldn't do it. They had to make a lot
of concessions to real world physics and geometry.

Of *course* the opening shows MTM walking around in Minneapolis. I've
known that since 19-fucking-70. Perhaps you don't understand what
establishing shots are, or even what a discussion is. Getting one's
wrist slapped for nothing is one sure way to bring such discussions to
a quick end, as here.
