Yes. Which in my case looks absolutely terrible. Though I look much happier

I don't understand what's going on with your equipment. If you are
receiving 720p or 1080i natively, but that's not what's being output,
then the receiver has screwed up the signal.

All I can say is that the native output from the Cox boxes looks lousy.

Fun! - My Spectrum box doesn't even give me the option!!

So I found the "High Definition" settings, and the options are:

480i
480p
720p
1080i
and
Auto select

But it won't let me select 'Auto select'!!

P.S. I haven't checked the 4K Apple TV box yet - I imagine that will
give me resolutions other than 1080i!

P.P.S. I got my ancient 1990s era DVD player to work with my OLED TV
via a RCA/Composite-to-HDMI converter yesterday! DVD image quality is
*awful* on this TV! Old-timey DVD's are virtually unwatchable on it!!

OK since I haven’t tried this for a long time
Settings/device settings/video display
Current video settings/you are currently set to the highest possible
resolution
16:9, 1080P60 HD (best available).
(The last time I tried this, the most you could get was 1080i so we may
have better results coming)
Zoom: full

OK, first, let’s see what other zoom settings are available
Full or none
None seems to compress the image horizontally.

The other video output resolutions are.
16:9, 1080i HD,
16:9, 720p HD
4:3, 480p SD.

So native isn’t anything that’s available to me anymore apparently.

I have no idea why you’d pick any lower resolution unless for some reason
you had an older set and that’s all it could handle.

OK choosing 480 causes the screen to flash a couple times making it
difficult to tell the difference but OMG it looks horrible even the text
they’re generating telling me what resolution it is looks horrible and then
it changes to a new screen that says why did you push this you fool you
can’t possibly want to do this. Push the button to go back to where you
were in the first place! So I did.

Choosing 1080i has a similar result as does 720.

I transition to 480. There’s a big valley episode on inspiration, which is
43 and looks fine. As does Susan Strasberg all in red as a painted lady.

After a few switches between different resolutions and channels I know are
SD and I know are HD I don’t see any difference in picture quality but the
menus and guides and such that Cox is generating are horrible in anything
but best quality.

I also see no way to find out what resolution anything is coming in at. My
CBS affiliate has little symbols for HD, ENG, CC.

Most channels have the same symbols. But I finally find that comment only
has the ENG. As do all the channels around it, all of which are retro
channels. An exception is charged, which has HD. So does inspiration where
I was watching big Valley before. But most of my retro channels and sub
channels are not HD which is what I would’ve expected. For some reason the
Hallmark channel has a restart button under the HD icon. Oxygen has an SAP
button. I have no idea how you’d invoke it though.
OK you have to actually turn that channel on and then pause it and under
the scrub you have that option. English or Spanish. I switch to Spanish
and… The Spanish looking people are all speaking in English. So that
doesn’t work. :-)

Air force one is on IFC. It picks up a couple icons I haven’t seen before
an orange circle that says 78% and a popcorn bucket that says 66%. Digging
deeper it also says 4K UHD, ENG, ESP, cc, and Internet. Possibly because
it’s also available from Netflix, AMC, AMC +, and Paramont +.

OK, stars, which I only get in Spanish, says, HD, ESP, cc, and SAP. So I
take a look at the SAP and it says it’s an English even though they’re
speaking Spanish. So I change the SAP to Spanish, and… Yes, that makes them
speak English. Suddenly I have stars in English!

But the CC is in Spanish

This is an absolutely horrible movie called a haunted house two and they
just dropped a safe on a dog.

The orange circle icon has turned into a green Asterix that says 8%. So
that’s fresh or rotten. And the popcorn bucket has turned over and spilled
its contents.

Oh OK so I am going to take a look and see if any movies that actually want
to see are coming up Since there’s a possibility I could actually watch
them in English.

But all the texting descriptions are in Spanish. Snarl.

And I don’t see titles of anything I recognize. The red turtle starring Tom
Hudson?

Having gone through a bunch of these I finally get to some 1980s Deathwish
movies starring Charles Bronson

Oh my God. Down to you with Freddie Prinze, Junior and Julia Stiles. The
movie where he drinks her shampoo because if their love is true, her
shampoo won’t hurt him. I hate that movie more than life itself.

Hey, Billy Zane is the phantom, which says I can watch it in English or
Spanish through movieplex. Or record it. I’ll record that one just to see
what happens.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it is still on my list.

Yeah, that’s the case here as well. But Blu-rays from my PS3 look awesome.

SD is, of course 480i not 480p. Be careful, those boxes have hard
drives in them and you have a bad track record with those.

Because I don't want 720p stepped up to 1080i, and I don't trust the box
not to distort the stepped-up output. Stepping up 480p to something else
means I lose the tv's zoom control or if I have closed captions turned on,
they bleed off the bottom of the screen.

Hah! What happened to her after the mid '70s? I guess I saw her in a few
things in the '80s. I know she died too young.

Never thought she looked a thing like her father.

OK I can see why you’d want 720 from 720 material that you might get from
Native. But that’s not what my Cox box is doing. My Cox box is simply
giving me four choices of how to output everything regardless of what the
input is. So if I chose 720 I’d be making the 480 go up and the 1080 go
down. Or I’d have to go into several layers of controls to change the
output for every program with no way to know what the input should be
except through outside reading.

Also, my TV zoom control, which has about eight different settings (all
arcanely named) still works fine.

My old DVR had zoom controls built into it, but this one doesn’t beyond
what we’re discussing here.

She was older than you thought. Born in 1938 she sort of did the “retire
when you’re 40 business” except she managed to stretch it out to 50. She
only had a couple small appearances after 1988 and died at 60.

> Never thought she looked a thing like her father.

I know who he is, of course, but had no mental image of him. Lucky for her
she must’ve looked like her mother!

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0833448/

Oops. Her mother looks to be kind of matronly and seriously 30 years older
than she could have been at any point in her life. She also died of cancer
at a young age. Here are a bunch of pictures of her with Marilyn Monroe:

https://www.theactorswork.com/2012/12/paula-strasberg-coaching-marilyn-monroe.html?m=1

I was unaware she had a daughter, who apparently didn’t go into the
business. She was born Jennifer Robin Jones, but is later called Jennifer
Jones Strasburg. It took some doing to confirm those are the same person.
This is supposed to be her, and she was a full head taller than her mother!

It might, if it was getting a feed other than the Cox box.

And then they went supposedly funny as the dog owner, who is black, starts
screaming for them to call 911 for the dog and tell them that it’s a white
dog so that they’ll come out and help. There’s nothing more left of this
dog, then there was of the wicked witch of the east.

Aw, who am I kidding. She’s probably not even in my top dozen favorites

So, it turns out, Spectrum doesn't even offer a "4K cable boxes" (which
may be good, as they'd surely charge more for it, after just jacking my
cable bill another $12+/month!) - it looks like only XFinity customers
can get 4K cable boxes...

Sure - I can get any of the streamers in 4K through my 4K Apple TV box.
In fact, I've already verified that.

But Spectrum doesn't even give you the option! I gather it's because
"regular broadcasters" (e.g. broadcast and cable networks) are not even
broadcasting in 4K yet. But from what I'm reading, that's likely to
start happening in the next couple of years. But Spectrum doesn't even
seem to be planning for the eventuality!!

My guess is you won't see the broadcasters moving to 4K until they are
ready to move to ATSC 3.0. Given how few are actually using ATSC 3.0
it seems like it may be a while before they move to 4K.

The broadcast is usually in P and Cox knocks it down to I which is why when
we’d flip between moms DVR and her house antenna, the house antenna image
would be noticeably better.

Yep. I'm strongly thinking of cutting the cord after my latest cable
bill price jack. So my next project/investment is likely to be to see
if I can find myself an internal antenna for over-the-air signals.

https://www.antennasdirect.com/

Assuming you are looking at a single location or area where your
broadcast signals are coming from something like the ClearStream Max-V
should do well for you. (I'm assuming you aren't located tens of miles
from the broadcast antennas. ) If you aren't going to mount it to the
wall or a window then get the mounting bracket and for around $90 you
would be set. You can also use their station locater and antenna
recommendation tool to pick out the perfect solution for your needs.

Or you can go with the Channelmaster site and do the same

Looks like all of the transmitters in your area have strong signals so
it shouldn't be hard to pick up those stations. One thing that can
help if you are trying to pick up stations from widely different
angles is a device to help locate the strongest signal with your
antenna. Get either a signal meter or a device that has one built in.
One suggestion is the one of the Mediasonic PVRs like this
https://www.amazon.com/Mediasonic-Converter-Recording-Multimedia-HW-150PVR-Y22/dp/B09VWRBTHG?ref_=ast_sto_dp
It has a built in signal meter so you can tell when your antenna is in
the ideal location. It also has a programming guide based on the info
the stations put out and can serve as a DVR if you add on a USB drive.
My understanding is the DVR functions aren't the best but they do have
the benefit of being written out in standard MPEG format so you can
hook up the USB drive to your PC and watch or back up the files to the
PC.

OK, good info - thanks shawn!

I probably want to avoid the necessity of getting a dedicated tuner for
an antenna, but it's good to know there's a decent one out there if I
change my mind (or if I have to get one regardless).

But at least there are relatively inexpensive indoor antenna options if
I just want to try that first...

The only thing I would advise if you just go to Amazon and look for
cheap antennas is a number of them use really thin wires running from
the antenna to your TV. Those thin wires don't protect the signal from
noise bleeding in and in a modern home there's plenty of noise. I got
one of those antennas (the square black ones) back when the switch to
HDTV first happened and the difference between the signal from that
and a Max-V antenna is night and day. The only channels I have trouble
picking up now are the really weak low power stations and those that
are coming from the sides instead of downtown Atlanta where most of
the broadcast antennas are located.

But if you get even a cheap antenna from the two sites I mentioned
above that shouldn't be an issue.

OK, it looks like you can just sit the Max-V on a stand - that
definitely looks promising!

I'm in a condo, so I don't want to do any wall-mounted stuff (and I
can't sit it on a roof). But if I can just sit in on a stand and put it
on top of something, that may solve my potential issues!

The "cheap" antenna I was thinking of was this one:

https://store.antennasdirect.com/ClearStream-Eclipse-HDTV-Antenna.html

But if I can put the Max-V on a stand, I'm definitely leaning in that
direction now...

Either of those should be good depending on what's between you and the
broadcast antennas. I've got the Max-V and it's worked out well for
me. At first I just taped it to a window (from the inside) and that
worked well enough as a quick fix, but I've since placed it on a stand
so that I set the antenna at a slight angle (my apartment faces south
while the broadcast antennas are more SW of my place) which is helped
clear up the few issues I had mostly with the few VHF stations we
still have.
