Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll were not doing caricature accents for
the main characters Andy and the Kingfish (Amos had long been a minor
character) as they based their voices on real people they knew. In early
days, the two of them were voicing all the characters, including women.

The show as adapted for television had an all-black cast and used the
multi-camera setup before I Love Lucy did. Even more important, the show
used black men in production and behind the camera work, and no other
show on television was going to do that.

I really never thought the radio program was all that funny and it could
be mean spirited but neither was it what the NAACP claimed it was in the
early 1950s when the contributed to its cancellation, 'cuz, you know, it
wasn't The Cosby Show.

Whoops. Turns out Bill Cosby wasn't Cliff Huxtable in real life. Oh

Vaudeville was still around in the early 1930s, and Red was born in
1913. He did join a traveling medicine show in 1926, then went on to
Vaudeville for several years.

I'm just pointing out that going into vaudeville that late wasn't going
to allow one to achieve fame and fortune. Even in the silent era,
vaudeville houses were showing movies and I don't think there was much
in the way of bookings from the national circuits by the early 1930s.

George Burns and Jack Benny and Fred Allen were born earlier and performed in
vaudeville proper.
