So, what, are all those locked so that you have to have somebody that works
there get you anything you want to buy? And there isn’t anybody working
there?

Yeah, you have to push a button on the wall to ask for the cabinet to be
unlocked for literally everything now. And there's never anyone around
to help you, so shopping becomes a futile experience.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Bezos is funding all the
shoplifting gangs to drive all the physical stores out of business.

So how tough would it be for the gangs to break open those cabinets?

Tougher than it is to walk in and scoop entire shelves of merchandise
into shopping carts and run out with it.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s promises from the campaign trail
have resurfaced, particularly the speech where he called theft the “crime of
poverty” and pledged to not prosecute it in order to establish “racial
equity.”...

It would be funny if it was played window glass but I imagine it’s tough
plexiglass. Still, you think the glass would be scratched to hell and
covered with spray paint.

Speaking of going out of business, I'm thinking after a couple more
lawsuits Fox News will fold up shop.

Maybe they should bring Lydia's and Service Merchandise type stores back.

The last time I was in my nearest Canadian Tire store, some of the sections had "grills" over the products to force you to get someone to unlock them if you wanted something. They weren't clear glass like this so it was harder to see the products and turn them around so that you could be sure what they were. It was only certain sections though: tools and some electronics. I'm not sure how long it's been like that at Canadian Tire since I haven't been there much the last few years and I don't know if it is ALL Canadian Tires or just the odd one.

For the sake of Americans, I should explain that Canadian Tire started out as being a tire resaler just after WWI but has been a general hardware store as long as I can remember. They still have an automotive section with service bays and tires but you can get housewares, sporting goods, plumbing and electrical supplies, tools, etc. etc. there too. Given that my nearest Canadian Tire is NOT in a bad neighbourhood and we haven't yet legalized shoplifting the way California has, I'm rather surprised to see some items being locked up.

This sort of thing has been common for a long time for more expensive
items. For instance MicroCenter (a computer parts store) has been
around for decades and always had their CPUs and RAM locked up. Not so
surprising since the boxes weren't that large and if you took the time
to open up the box to get to the CPU you've got someone not much
larger than a half dollar coin so it is easy to hide and worth
hundreds of dollars.
