chromosomes and more importantly their musculature. Obviously this

(And much to my surprise the International Chess Federation has within
the past two weeks banning transexuals from womens' competitions -
which is having interesting consequences for the Chess Federation of
Canada given for their national championship they didn't receive any
guidance (until 2 weeks ago) and accordingly allowed a trans woman in
their national championships for women. Which is REALLY interesting
since the International Federation maintains international rating
lists and on THOSE lists trans women have "F" next to their name......
As a national officer of the Chess Federation of Canada I am holding
my breath to see how this all plays out.)

Why does chess need separate categories for males and females?

Unlike sports, chess is a game of the mind. Men have no inherent
advantage over women in chess. There's no reason men and women can't
compete on equal footing.

That's the case with acting as well. The whole "Best Actor" and "Best
Actress" distinction never made sense to me. There's no inherent
advantage for men over women with regard to acting that would justify
separate categories for men and women.

It was to promote the guys' performances in the early days of the
Oscars. Generally, the top actresses were higher paid at the time and
brought in the audience. There weren't always enough excellent
performances from men to make all the nominations.

They asked this question during a BBC News segment, and
all the man they were questioning could come up with
was "for social reasons maybe."

I've got another idea of why the separation.

I could be tradition, depending on how long ago the
chess federation was founded and it was never revisited
to change the categories over the years. *OR* it could
(more likely) be because there are still many (ahem)
patriarchal countries that limit the freedom of their
female populations to mingle with those of the opposite
sex.

If those categories didn't exist, how likely would it
be that many of the Muslim countries would allow females
to compete in chess tournaments where they might actually
be in a room with a male they're not related to? Horrors!

And how likely would it be that the folks in charge of
this international chess federation would come out and
say it out loud?

in her high school just to be allowed to register for
the Electronics classes that were considered "boys only,"
so can sympathize with women who still have to deal with
the "boys only" rules in their countries

There are arguments such as natural male aggressiveness conferring some
advantage.

Then that's just a game strategy. Whether to play aggressively or not is
a choice and can be learned and implemented by women just as well as
men. If a woman chooses not to play aggressively and loses to men who
do, that's on her.

Well, if countries with misogynistic social traditions lose out on being
able to compete because of their 11th Century views, that's on them.
They can either move into the modern world with the rest of us or they
can forever be barred from competing in chess tournaments.

But in any event, it's not for us to create artificial segregated
barriers in our society to appease their barbaric sensibilities.

As a follow up, just this morning I was contacted by the CBC looking
for a comment on the international chess federation's release (as
National Secretary I could readily envision being asked). I simply
passed on the reporter's e-mail to the national president to speak (or
not) for us. He would rightfully be annoyed if I had shot off without
his knowledge or worse been quoted in national newspapers.

But no question women have been competing in chess tournaments for
100+ years both in general tournaments (either open or invitational)
and in womens' events. This is not new. I do not know how many
transgender members of the Chess Federation of Canada there might be
(I know it's > 0) but among adult players about 10% of our membership
are women. I've been told there are a few transgender players with "F"
after their name on the international rating lists.

It would have been a complete non-story if the National Post hadn't
put the story in their front section.

It's been suggested that high levels of testosterone make one more
aggressive and no question nearly all top chess players have a high
level of aggression.

I'm not totally convinced on that but no question that could be said
of most world chess champions going back 100 years.

For sure - but most of this discussion concerns players in the top
1000 in the world - not amateurs like me.

I've run chess tournaments from the local club level to the national
championshop and earned my International Arbiter title from FIDE
(which is the international chess organization that made the press
release we're discussing). Note that skill at organizing event does
not equal skill playing the game as I've proven to my horror again and
again....
