Only problem with that is time. A dinner in Paris is going to happen
early in the morning for you. Now Bora Bora actually works out well
for you as it looks to be maybe an hour or so earlier than in Los
Angeles.

Which is why so many people are taking advantage of remote work now.
No need to get into the car and spend that half hour or more in
traffic. I've been looking for work and most jobs (professional) allow
for either complete remote or at least remote work a few days a week.
Obviously, if the job requires your physical presence there isn't an
option for remote work but many professional level jobs don't require
you to actually be in the office every day.

Doesn't stop the managers from demanding it.

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky

I'd rather have the Stargate beaming technology. At least that preserves
your molecules. In Star Trek, the transporter recreates you. Shudder

Only with great difficulty. Transporters can’t reach geostationary orbit,
which is why the enterprise is always spiraling in the instant they lose
power. You’re talking about relay satellites all over the place that ate
too low to stay up by themselves without being pushed higher again through
some mechanism. And we don’t even know if the colony is spread out over
the planet. 8000 people could easily all be in one tiny city.

I can’t even successfully fanwank it.

The TOS enterprise transporters have a range limit of 16,000 miles.

One assumes the space dock which seems to stay over San Francisco is in
some sort of geostationary “orbit“ and is significantly higher than that.

But they say they have to use the space dock transporters because the
enterprise transporters aren’t working yet.

You’re talking about a tiny colony. They don’t need it. And if they did
want it, they can’t use it for long-distance without a ton of relay
satellites. Those 8000 people probably have better things to use the
resources on. Like a back up food supply.

100 years later you could do that on deep space nine’s earth.

Why didn't Stargate or Babylon 5 ever get to the big screen, anyway?

Well, presumably the colony will expand-- that's kinda the point of
colonies, after all-- and transporters would make expansion a lot
easier. Moving construction materials from place to place, etc. And even
without the expansion, I'm sure there're parts of the planet the people
would like to visit on their downtime of for scientific research where
beaming would be a huge asset.

If Earth was uninhabited and colonists settled in what is currently the
Saint Louis area (no Arch), I bet the folks would love to enjoy the
beaches of Hawaii on their days off. Or hike in the Swiss Alps. With
transporters, that sort of thing is a breeze.

> And if they did want it, they can't use it for long-distance without

Given the level of technology in the Federation, I can't imagine why a
satellite net wouldn't be standard-issue equipment for colonies. They'd
be easy to bring with the colonists on a big ship like the Enterprise
and would just launch out of the cargo bay and self-deploy around the
globe automatically on arrival.

And as Kodos proved, transporters are necessary in case you have to
quickly and cleanly slaughter half the population of your colony.

One assumes the deadly fungus that destroyed the primary food supply
would have attacked any backups as well.

Star Trek seems to think that a ship can enter "standard orbit" at any
altitude, and the ship will remain over a particular spot on the
planet's surface indefinitely. This can be done, but only at an
"altitude" of tens of thousands of miles. Instead, we always see the
ship orbiting at only two hundred miles or so.

Conceivably the ship could fly, under power, around and around a planet
but not orbit it.

Yes, when they say “orbit” they need “station keeping”

They’re still converting matter to energy and back again.

I don't think the Stargate people got that deep into their thinking
about how it works. They call what the stargates do "demolecularizing
and reassembling" after shooting your demolecularized bits thru a
wormhole. Ring transporters are probably doing the same since both are
Alteran/Ancient technology. Asgard "beaming", who knows.

Star Trek transporters are mass->energy->mass remote converters.

Can you imagine the "jet lag" you'd get?

Don't Stargates creates wormholes between two gates that you just pass thru?
