Yeah, I'm not doing that.

My hope was that I could "wash" these posts through a plain text reader,
but to my surprise doing that didn't take out things like 'curly' quotes.

I don't think there's a pure ASCII solution here folks.

You do it with macros or you use the on line tool I pointed out to you
which will replace an em dash with a hyphen.

It sounds like the em dash glyph in the font you display emails with
is... inadequate. Size does matter.
