McNamara attributes the failure (a euphemism) in Vietnam to a universal law. In doing so, he only makes matters worse. The US are unaware of universal laws or do not believe they apply to them.

The US is in approximately the same stage as the Roman Empire
in the 3rd century AD.

<g> In a way, yes. Decades ago, I read Graham Greene's "The Silent American". Today I was reminded of it thanks to an article on Afghanistan (did you post that?). In the early years, Karzai had an agreement with the Taliban, but had to cancel it because Rumsfeld didn't want Americans involved in a deal with terrorists. The silent American in Greene's book tried to prevent a deal with the communists in Vietnam (iirc).
