In Thunderbird I filter out messages with "pedofila" and other choice words. Once in while a new one sneaks in and I filter that also. A lot of these spammers change their e-mail addresses.

What worked for me was to create a message filter in Thunderbird.

For anyone else who wants to go this route:

Select the newsgroup in the Thunderbird sidebar. Go to the "Tools" menu
and select "Message Filters".

Click "New".

At the top of the window, in the text entry box after "Filter name:",
label your message filter to remind you what it does, such as "Ignore
Super Annoying Italian Rants on Usenet".

In the middle area of the window, below "Match all of the following",
click "Subject" and select "Customize..." from the drop-down menu that
appears. Enter the phrase "NNTP-Posting-Host" without the quotes and
click "Add" and then "OK".

You will now see "NNTP-Posting-Host" "contains" followed by a blank
space. Enter "84.198.244.197" without the quotes in that space.

Near the bottom of the window, there is a section with the heading
"Perform these actions:". It defaults to "Copy Message to". Click on
that to reveal a drop-down menu, and choose "Ignore thread". Click the
"OK" button and close the Message Filters window.

This is a brute force method of dealing with the unwanted messages and
will ensnare threads from anyone else who happens to be posting from the
same host. So far that doesn't seem to have happened. I didn't see any
other obvious common denominator in the headers of the various offending
messages that could be used, but maybe there's something I missed.

These instructions were written using Thunderbird version 91.5.1 on a
Mac. The principle applies to other newsgroup readers (it was possible
to do something similar in MacSOUP, for instance) but the details will
differ.

Also in Thunderbird, I have 4 filters: I delete messages whose subject contains "pedofila," "pedofilo," "assassina" and "assassino." That seems to have done the trick so far.

You mean you mark it as "abuse" right? First, you have to do that with every new post. Using a filter in Thunderbird or another real news reader is less work and more effective. You seem to have taken offense at my saying Google Groups users get what they deserve. That seems odd to me. We all deserve the results of our actions, don't we? I didn't say you deserve to die, or deserve to lose all your money or freedom. I said that if you choose not to undertake the very simple step of using the right tool for the job, you are going to have a worse outcome, and that is your choice. There is no reason to be offended.

Thanks! I had hoped to make a similar filter but didn't see a way to do
it. My old newsreader could do this easily but that was many operating

No offense at all. I was just thinking about it and wondering if I was due for some form of poetic justice. I also have the attitude that if Google is going to bother, then the interface should work.

I've had newsreaders before and would go back to one if I had to. You are paying someone for access, right?

As to the general question of "We all deserve the results of our actions, don't we?", I'd have to say "Hell, no." There are results that are inevitable and seem appropriate and others that are arbitrary or clearly unjust (this includes all "blame the victim" formulas: "yes, they broke the law, but you are the stupid person unworthy of equal justice because you actually asked for it."). Obviously, those are two extremes and there are miles in-between. And all we can do is judge after the fact (and fight about differing views) whether the results were appropriate.

Do we get what we deserve? Rarely, I'd say. I'm more inclined to think that no good deed goes unpunished, but I usually think that in a humorous fashion.

Thunderbird is free but you have to pay for a service provider. Years ago usenet was included with internet service. I don't know if there is a free news service. I pay Supernews about $5.95 per month. I've used them for many years and have never had a problem nor an occasion to call their service desk.

I've had rejections when I tried to post several accumulated reply
drafts. Too many at one time looks like spam to it.

I'm using news.aioe.org now. I see no performance difference between it and supernews. For some reason Thunderbird will not load your wisecrack about the 40 posts per day limit, but I read it in Google Groups.

It is always possible to post more than 40 times daily when using more

Why would I doubt it? Because it's free? Sometimes you get more than you pay for. Sometimes there is such a thing as a free lunch. Not often, though.
