The traditional preferred method of studying Judaica is in groups or with a study partner.

As to using the internet on the Sabbath, the prohibition is so basic I'm a little surprised at you ignorance or naivity, whatever you want to call it.

The Talmud was complete long before the discovery of electricity, so the Rabbis had some thinking to do. Often halachic rulings are compromises and become law over time. The basic rule on electricity is that you can't turn it on and off during the Sabbath. But if you turn the lights on before the Sabbath starts you can benefit from the light. You can even pre-set a timer for them to go on and off. Og course these rules (any rules?) seem ridiculous to many. Some greet them with contempt, others have respect for traditions even if they themselves to follow them. A basic Sabbath rule is that you cannot complete anything (?), because the whole point is to desist from creative and and destructive activities in emulation of you know who. Turning electricity on completes a circuit and turning it off destroys the circuit, so it is verboten. If you do it with a timer you are not doing itself during the prohibited time.

Tradition went out the window a long time ago.

I am equally surprised at your ignorance or naïveté.
The internet has only been around for 30 or so years.

I am perfectly capable of thinking without any help
from Rabbis or anyone else.

You just refuted your own theory. We don't turn the
internet on or off. We don't turn electricty on or off.
We don't turn computers on or off. All our tech gear
is on all the time. We use uninterruptible power
supplies, generators and energy storage batteries.
All the light switches are light activated.

What do your Rabbies think about having robots
work on weekends ?!?

We (or at leasr some of us) know full well what
Orthodox Judaism is and how it works. My point
was simply that I do not see myself obligated to
accept anyone's judgment on what is really just
a matter of interpretation.

"You've had two f****n' weeks to decide if you want a f****n' beard, or a job. This isn't the goddam House of David f****n' baseball team this is the Buddy Rich Band."

You are also reflecting ignorance about what orthodox Judaism is. A basic tenet is that all Jews are obligated to keep the laws. There are exceptions. A Jew who doesn't know the laws is not considered to be sinning if he doesn't observe the Sabbath or keep Kosher, for example. The more one knows the more serious such violations are considered to be. But we have no cardinal sins. Your mitzvahs and sins are balanced and you get what you deserve in the afterlife. I'm not saying you have to believe in this. You can think it's all bunk. My saying this doesn't even necessarily reflect my own personal beliefs. It is simply (part of) a definition.

There are no Jewish religious laws about Internet use.
A Rabbi's interpretation built from glueing together a
hundred split hairs does not qualify as "law" as far as
I am concerned.

Thanks! I feel so much relieved. Otherwise, surfing
the internet on Sabbath is no different than leaving
the lights on, or using Sabbath elevators. Some
synagogues actually held Zoom services during
lockdowns. How is that different from Dan Koren
surfing the net or using Zoom on Sabbath?

There is the "I" again. "You" don't get to define Judaism. Why is that so hard to understand?

Pretending you really want to know. When you press a key on your keyboard, a connection of some sort is made. That is considered a completion, i.e. a creative activity. It is forbidden on the Sabbath. Period. I know you think that's nuts and that you don't give a hoot about the several thousand years of Rabbinic analysis and ruling that led to this (uncontested by any Rabbi that calls himself Orthodox) religious law, but this isn't about you, you, you.

You are one of the most self-centered people I've ever encountered.

As we all know, not all synagogues are Orthodox.
The time is long overdue to call your bluff that
only Orthodox Judaism is true Judaism. And I
have reason to believe some Orthodox groups
actually used Zoom on Sabbath, judging from
information coming from relatives in Israel.

> > How is that different from Dan Koren surfing the

> Pretending you really want to know.

Not pretending anything. I asked you to present a
logical argument as to why it is OK for you to use
a Sabbath elevator or leave a warm plate on, while
at the same time it is not OK for me or anyone else
to keep surfing the internet. As you know, no one
turns the internet off or on Friday night or the next
evening.

It is a simple, logical, straightforward question that
you keep trying to talk around.

> When you press a key on your keyboard, a connection
> of some sort is made. That is considered a completion,

This is a grotesque analogy. There is no "completion" of
any activity by surfing the internet. Are you also stating
one is not allowed to write or play the piano on weekends?

> Period.

Nope. You only get a semi-colon for such a twisted argument.

> I know you think that's nuts and that you don't give a hoot

How can there be thousands of years of Rabbinic analysis of
situations that only materialized during the last 3 decades?

> and ruling that led to this (uncontested by any Rabbi that calls
> himself Orthodox) religious law, but this isn't about you, you, you.

As pointed out earlier, there are other branches of Judaism
than the Orthodox. Your "argument" sounds very much like
a Catholic denying Protestants are Christian too.

We were talking about orthodoxy. What Conservative, Reform or Reconstructionist Judaism believe or do is another matter.

I have used the term "traditional." I have never said anything about "true" Judaism.

I'll believe it when I see it. I assume you mean during the Covid shutdowns. In Baltimore and elsewhere Synagogues were closed for a time and had reduced occupancy for while and, of course, required masks. There were adhoc services held in back yards. I heard of no zooming.

Absolutely no writing or playing the piano on the Sabbath. Now you are getting it.

And why would that "other matter" not be relevant to
the discussion about what one may or may not do
on Sabbath ?!? There is clearly room for more than
one interpretation.

Fine, but that does not make it mandatory practice for
everyone else.

OK, then I wil switch to the fiddle and climb on the roof.
This is perfectly tolerable as long as I can keep eating
sushi.

> Now you are getting it.

I always got it. But I didn't always agree with "it".

Again, the main point of this discussion is that
anyone is entitled to his/her/its interpretation
of any book, no matter what others think of it.

You are entitled to borrow your interpretation
from others, if you believe they are smarter or
more knowledgeable that you, or even if you
are too lazy to deconstruct and reconstruct
things on your own from first principles.

Other people are no less entitled to reason
through and follow their own interpretations.

Therefore, I declare the following:

1) I am entitled to eat sushi on weekends or
any other day. I don't eat meat or dairy, so
the only way to stay alive is to eat sushi
and selected veggies. And chocolate. It
is a life saving/preserving mitzvah.

2) I am entitled to play the piano on weekends,
even if it upsets the neighbors. I don't have
time to practice during the week, so I really
have no choice. It is a spiritual mitzvah.

3) I am entitled to sip Bowmore and Springbank
any time in order to keep my balance. This is
a medical mitzvah.

4) I am entitled to drink Indonesian coffee any
time in order to keep my bood pressure from
dropping to zero -- even though Indonesian
coffee is not kosher. It is a life preserving
mitzvah.

What is wrong with you? Everything I've said about Orthodox Judaism could have said if I was a Presbyterian or a Hottentot. Things have definitions. There may be gray areas in a definition, but things need to be definable.

A reform Rabbi would have nothing to disagree with what I have said. We started this talking about orthodoxy. I have made no judgements about what is correct. You refuse to have the discussion on my terms, so there is no point in continuing. I am amazed at you obfuscation. Truly.

Of course. We all know (and have known for a long time) that
Presbyterians and Hottentots are just branches of Judaism.

Of course they do. There is nothing however in the definition
of the internet or the way it functions that prevents one from
using it during weekends. Not buttons or switches to turn off
or on. I asked you to explain from a rabbinical point of view
how using the internet differs from using a Sabbath elevator
or a 24 hour warming plate, and you did not offer even the
simplest explanation.

Yes, they are, and yes they need to be. One still needs to
explain how it follows from the definition of the internet
(whatever that is) that it cannot or should not be used
on Sabbath.

All the obfuscation is entirely in your corner. I asked a very
simply question, and you did not answer it. Given that there
is nothing in the Bible or in the Talmud about the internet,
and given that no "actions" are involved in using it, how is
surfing on internet on weekends verboten from a Halachic
POV? If you cannot provide yourself an explanation, can
you provide links and pointers to the relevant rabbies'
rulings?

Thx,

Perhaps you should read this:

https://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/8968/is-it-forbidden-to-use-the-internet-on-shabbat

As you see, there is plenty of room for more than one
interpretations.
