to your other point, there are obvious signs of
medievalism resurfacing in many places on
the planet. Whether this amounts or not to
"World == USA" I leave to the readers to
figure our. Also note that in programming

Well, it is just a silly little youtube video. Rushdie talks about loving knowledge and the universities turning out "expertise". However, the thing starts with "I read a report in the newspaper that 50% of self-identified Republicans say universities are bad for America" or something like that.
This is "knowledge is beauty" and "expertise"? Scanning a news report that confirms your gut feelings (American Republicans are bad and stupid) and then just free-associating? No questions to self how this survey was conducted, or what could be behind it. Or whether universities really deliver expertise in the form of thousands of bachelors of something?

for the problems they see, but it's far more likely that people
are reacting quite reasonably to what boils down to an increased
tolerance and even encouragement of indoctrination at our
colleges and universities.

And yet some views are beyond respectability. How does a public school system draw the line? The advantage of a private school system is that schools would decide for themselves what to teach (or what morning prayers to say, if any) and parents would simply choose to send their kids to schools they were comfortable with. Competition among schools would temper, though probably not eliminate radicalism (however defined).

Yes, I know there are other issues with a purely private school system. No need to discuss it here.
