Just resurrecting this for two reasons

1. I’m interested in Debussy Preludes 2 (once every 12 years it seems!)

2. Reading it I was reminded of what rmcr was like. What scared them all away?

RMCR was a truly remarkable newsgroup. We won't see its like again, but we soldier on.

Like in 2010 it's still Paul Jacobs or Richter for me. Gieseking wasn't remarkable, Ogawa just OK and Casadesus was frankly poor.

Those are the ones I possess. I might go on YT and add some more - maybe!

I can't help feeling a loss for the Jewish people and music lovers. Nevertheless I hope he is happy and fulfilled.

I wonder if he had encountered a Rabbi gifted in outreach, what would have happened?

Jews and Rabbies tend to keep low profiles
in France. It is still a profoundly anti-semitic
country, even though in a relatively "civlized"
manner.

There’s a couple of pieces from Bk 2 on one of Sofronitsky’s Scriabin Museum CDs. Terrible piano and rubbish sound, amazing concert! It’s with some Liszt, it was a good night for Sofronitsky.

There’s a Michelangeli BK 2 from Stuttgart in 1982 which I think is exceptional, appalling sound, an Aura CD.

Chabad is everywhere. The spelling of Rabbis is not Rabbies. The antisemitsm among many French Arabs (citizens or not I do not know) is often not civilized.

Sorry to hear.

I was taught by my English teachers the plural of
words ending in .../i or .../y is .../ies. As one sees
in baby/babies, /buddy/buddies, dummy/dummies,
memory/memories or story/stories. Perhaps US
usage is different.

I was referring to the broader population, which
includes both Catholics and Protestants, and to
the Deep State. Remember L'Affaire Dreyfuss?

I’m impressed by Gordon Furgus Thompson Bk 2 preludes. That’s the best new discovery for me so far in this music.

Did some listening on YT. Kars is kind of interesting but too slow in parts of the music, so not for me.

Fergus-Thompson and Frankl were not interesting to me. I'd rather listen to Pollini, though not a top choice.

I've never understood what Zimerman does with music, and that's true here as well.

The sound in Michelangeli's live concert is quite good enough for me so it joins Richter and Jacobs. He also issued a DG recording which isn't quite as good, but still one of the top ones.

Pollini is a top choice for me. Not the studio recording so much, but in a concert recital from 2004, there’s some dispute about where it happened, possibly Munich, possibly Amsterdam. I can let you have it if you want.

I think Michelangeli live is worth hearing there, for sure.

Anyone here enjoy Arrau in Bk 2?

Oh by the way, there is another very good one which I can share privately, it’s outstanding. By Richard Goode, a concert recording. I’d like to see him in concert.

yes it’s very good but . . . there’s a but coming . . . it really doesn’t efface the memory of Richter and Pollini and Goode live. So not “top tier” for me.

I know what you were referring to. I wanted to put the situation of the Jews in France into a more realistic context.

The Jews in France are in danger and they know it.
There is more immigration to Israel from France
than from any other Western country.

All Catholic majority countries are and have been
fundamentally anti-Semitic forever, just as all the
Protestant majority countries.

The main reason the US is less anti-Semitic than
Europe is that neither Catholics nor Protestants
are a majority.

Not per capita. Unnormalized metrics are meaningless.
However one cannot expect fiddlers to understand math
or statistics.

The source you quote shows 80k from France vs. 120k
from the USA. France's total population is around 80M
while the USA's is around 330M. Jewish population in
France is currently below 500k, while in the USA it is
over 7M. I trust you know how to calculate ratios and
percentages.
