Okay. What's Buc-ee's and where does it dwell?

Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Currently pursuing
expansion into more of the Deep South.

I'll pass.

I'll advise that you stop by if ever traveling in the south. The
bathrooms are freaking awesome and continuously cleaned by a multiple
person staff. No toilet stalls, toilet rooms. I just got my truck
washed at ours.

That's lovely, Lynn. Good for them. But after a week in
Florida (N.B. the bathrooms at W Disney World are also
immaculate), I don't want to go even near there again. Hot and
steamy, and this was in May. Note also that the park segments
are surrounded by miles and miles of native Floridian swamp,
carefully preserved, and surrounded by signs saying "Caution:
alligators and snakes may be present." My daughter was rather
disappointed that we saw no alligators except animatronics.

The ‘gators are there. A while back a family ignored the signs. They are
now missing a two-year-old. Every ever so often there’s a news story about
someone walking their dog too close to a canal or other body of water, and
how little Fluffy became ‘gator chow. Remember, it’s _Florida_. If
there’s fresh water, there’s a ‘gator. Or two. Or three. ‘Gators
aren’t fond of salt or brackish water. Crocs are, but there aren’t any
crocs in Florida north of the Miami-Dade/Broward County line. The biggest
concentration of crocs on the North American mainland is in the cooling
canals and such around FPL’s Turkey Point nuclear plant, in Miami-Dade
County. There are swarms of crocs further south, in Cuba and Jamaica and
Hispanola and northern South America ranging up to southern Mexico...

If you want to see ‘gators (and crocs) go on I-75 between Miami and Tampa.
There’s a reason why it’s called Alligator Alley.

Snakes are there, too. In addition to the usual North American suspects
(cottonmouths, eastern diamondbacks, the occasional copperhead who doesn’t
know he’s not supposed to be in Florida, etc.) there are imports, notably
Burmese pythons and, less press, but still present, assorted other large
constrictors. (Yes, including anacondas. Really.) Note that many Central and
East Coast Florida rattlesnakes no longer rattle; there’s been evolutionary
pressure to eliminate those who make noise, humans kill ‘em. There are also
a lot of snapping turtles in Central Florida. They’re called alligator
snapping turtles for a reason. A few bright lads brought in Komodo dragons
and other monitor lizards, some of which got loose; those have been (mostly)
rounded up. Some of the same bright lads brought in iguanas, ugly but
harmless as long as you’re not vegetation, though they make more copious
messes than geese, even Canada geese, and they grow to nine feet and look
scary. Around here iguanas are now the #1 road-killed animals, beating out
raccoons and even possums. Dead iguanas stink almost as bad as dead skunks
and there are a whole lot more dead iguanas.

Other states may have ‘gators. Florida has _lots_ of ‘gators, some of
which like fast food in general and Wendy’s in particular; one recently had
some fun in Lee County, a.k.a. Ye Back of Beyond, Fl. Florida also has
Florida Man; one Florida Man thought that it’d be funny to throw a baby
‘gator into the window at a Wendy’s drive-through.

Back in the 70s, in Sarasota, my father had a neighbor ’gator that just

If I found gators in the park (there's one a couple blocks
downhill from us) I would, by preference, call Animal Control and
have them lassoo the critter and take it to the Steinhart
Aquarium in San Francisco, where they already have a pool full of
alligators.

But yes, if a gator came near any of my cats, I would feed it
something lethal. And, preferably, quick-acting.

If you want to see alligators, come to south Texas. I live 10 miles
north of Brazos Bend State Park that has 35,000 alligators in it.
Several of my neighbors are complaining to our Sheriff that their ponds
have alligators in them now. The 3 to 5 foot long gators are leaving
the state park now because the bigger gators are eating them. The
sheriff won't do anything the gators "become a nuisance".
https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/brazos-bend

"Hike and bike trails: Trails circle lakes, connecting with each other
and heading into the hardwood forest. Pets must be on a leash no longer
than six feet, and must not drink from or enter the lakes. Read about
alligator safety on park maps and on signs in the park."
https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/alligator-safety

There is a 14 foot long gator under the fishing pier. Don't fall in.

Thanks, I don't think I will. If I felt a drastic need to see
alligators, I'd get someone to take me to Steinhart Aquarium,
where I could also satisfy my curiosity as to whether they still
have a tank full of piranka.

And if I don't feel moved to do even that, I'll get out the DVD
of _The Muppet Movie_ and look at the Muppet alligator.

Yes, I did. My quick scan missed it too.

I thought that piranka was a cross between piranha and another fish
breed. Kind of like our dog who is a Schnaupin, a cross between a
Schnauzer and a Pinscher.

I doubt that the State of California has seen any need to protect
alligators, since AFAIK any alligators found in the wild here
would be an invasive species.

I do seem to recall that in the 1950s or thereabouts alligators
became a threatened species on their home turf, because
alligator-hide purses and shoes were very fashionable (and
expensive, and therefore a status symbol). The fact that WDW had
to put up all those signs by every body of water suggests that
they have made a recovery.
