Somebody could write a program to compose music in the style of Bach or Mozart or Schubert. The problem is that the developer would only write a program that conforms to her understanding of Bach's (or the others) music, possibly with the help of musicians and musicologists, and then train the program on a corpus of compositions of those composers. The program would only churn out compositions written in forms that the composer used, and the understanding of those forms has no primary sources, the composer being long dead, and do within those forms what the composer is statistically. We might then try to apply the program to forms the composer was unfamiliar with, but it will never be more than a composition "in the style of ..." What if Bach lived long enough to start composing in sonata form, Mozart long enough to interact with Beethoven, or Schubert long enough to experience Wagner's operas? We really have no idea how those musical minds would take those new approaches to composition, and what direction they would take. What the program would produce might be some interesting and novel compositions in a particular style, but the elements of which will never be more than something the original composers said already.

Every completion by a human of the scherzo of Schubert's unfinished
symphony has been so bad that I can imagine a computer program doing
as well. Trying to do something more modest like a computer program
arranging a work in the standard repertory for a different
instrumental combination might produce something more interesting.
