I'm old - I don't trust text editors to safely handle an entire db dump.

No. The packet methodology is NOT a form of encryption.

Get any "sniffer" program on a standard network, and unless the
endpoints are doing some form of encryption, you can read what passes
through as plain text. Type in a user name and password to authenticate
on a basic ethernet network, and you can read the information straight
from the packets.

That is NOT encryption.

Just one last: It may be easier just to force all connections to HTTPS,
by adding something like this to httpd.conf:
<Location /*>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule .* https://%{HTTP_HOST}:443%{REQUEST_URI} [QSA,R=permanent,L]
</Location>

There's probably an(other) easier way. :-)

Cheers,

Of course, he's not yet willing to make those changes. Which is fine.

Kind of line transferring files back when you had to worry about
whether or not the 8th bit would be transmitted. What fun /that/ was!
