xkcd: Every Data Table

True dat.

So much better than his xkcd 2500 that had totally massaged climate that
does not even resemble reality.

Not the lead pipe? Or the monkey wrench may be
more appropriate to the events described.

Bird's nest soup -- who the hell was desperate enough to climb a cliff
and boil the bird-spit from a swallow's nest to eat?

Escargot, though, aren't particularly strange. I like escargot. It's
not just the French who eat them, either; in Catalonia they're called
caracoles and cooked in the shell.

Since more people are tripping over that,
I'll mention that the reader-managed "explain"
page for the comic does actually say that, and
also what further options are. And if it did not,
then... well, all of us would, anyway.

Or you might print the lines in italics...
or in gothic with a black border.

I've eaten escargot, once. They were yummy. But anything
simmered in enough garlic butter would taste good.

But how bad is your situation when you are not only eating snails, you
are doing it often enough to become creative in how you cook them?

M.F.K. Fischer told a story of traveling through the French
countryside (between the World Wars, IIRC) and observing French
peasants harvesting wine grapes. They also set fires in the tall
grass; when those burn out it was time for lunch, and they picked
up the now-cooked snails and pulled them out of their shells, and
squeezed the juice from bunches of withered grapes into their
mouths.

"Roasted snails and raw wine! They crossed themselves before
they ate."

See my post upthread, quoting M.F.K. Fischer on roasted snails
and raw wine. What the heck, they were free.

I have had MREs a few times, one of my cousins would bring some on my
dad's hunting trips, and some of them were alright but I think the big
problem is that they mostly did not taste like food.

Pig's feet. Boil for a few hours to start.
https://www.soulfoodandsoutherncooking.com/pigs-feet-recipe.html

" Begin by giving the pigs feet a good washing. For the purpose of
presentation, remove any unsightly hair that you observe. Yes, pigs grow
hair on the toes and feet just like humans. A disposable razor will
remove the hair.
Place all the ingredients in a large boiling pot and cover with
water. Bring water to a boil over medium-high heat and then reduce heat
to a simmer. Cover the pot with a lid and allow pigs feet to cook until
tender, about 3 hours. While your meat is cooking stir constantly and
skim away any foam that develops."

My brother-in-law was a missionary in outer areas of New Guinea for four
years back in the 1970s. The natives used the WWII C rations and K
rations cans for landfill. If the villages ever ran out of food, they
would go dig them up. He said the taste was ... interesting.

Today's MREs are pretty good. My former USMC son lived on them for
months in Iraq. They even have platoon level MREs for feeding twenty
Marines in the field. The scrambled eggs are terrible though.

The big problem with MREs is they are low on fiber. The prevailing
theory on that among the Marines is that constipated soldiers fight
harder and meaner.
