So who besides the Rosenbergs (who I do not know of any evidence they
ever met Einstein) got the chair?

As for Einstein, the evidence is that FDR took him VERY seriously and
it was only the fact that Einstein's letter arrived at the White House
on 6 Dec 1941 that the Manhattan project took as long as it did to get
going - FDR you understand being somewhat tied up the next 48 hours
after the letter arrived at his desk!

For what it's worth 4 1/2 years later, the evidence is that the
professors at the Physics department at the university in Hiroshima
knew EXACTLY what had hit them almost immediately and were mostly
amazed as they clearly understood the level of engineering skill and
manufacturing ability it would take to actually produce a nuke (and
that they had made a proposal to the Japanese government to that
effect which was deferred as it was not felt it could be built given
Japan's level of heavy industrial capacity during wartime. This was
the view in Britain as well coupled with the fact that the Brits knew
most of the uranium ore for the British nuke would have to come from
Canada. In the event most of Canada's wartime uranium output went to
the Manhattan project)

By late 1941 it was understood that the atomic bomb was at least as
much a manufacturing and engineering challenge more so than one of
physics.

What's your point? I'm pretty sure everybody reading this knows that
the United States was at war in 1943 and that wartime press censorship
was part of that. I'm equally sure most here know comic books (which
at that time were considered children's literature) were while
definitely part of the press considered much less likely to
inadvertently release sensitive data than the print media. And

Not very smart though--any journalist worthy of the name who was given
such a list and told not to mention any of it would know that there
was something in the works. Not that it was much of a secret to the
physics community--one of my professors, who had been in grad school
at the time, commented that when they put together the list of noted
physicists who had "disappeared" the obvious conclusion was "atom
bomb".

noting the disappearance of prominent Americans

Fair enough - but the Manhattan Project was always first an
engineering and production triumph rather than a chemical or
radiologicol triumph.

Within an hour of the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb Japanese
physicists had figured out WHAT had hit them and that it involved
creating a critical mass of U-235 (they weren't aware of plutonium
which was used in the Nagasaki bomb but U-235 was used in the
Hiroshima bomb) and that radioactive materials were what the A-bomb
was all about.

What they didn't have was the ability to set up a manufacturing plant
capable of actually building an atomic bomb of theri own.

Something along the lines of in the present day I know what goes into
producing a reusable rocket but don't have the production ability at
my command to actually do what SpaceX and their friends can do. I
suspect an aeronautical engineer would have a better idea than I do on
the specifics but without a manufacturing operation at his beck and
call he'd have no more success than I would.

The 'glory' of the US effort 1945-50 is that the engineers of the day
worked out what the obstacles to the bomb were and how to overcome
them which is very much a non-trivial exercise. For obvious reasons
they keep the key points secret - how much of each isotope is critical
mass, the specifics of isotope separation stuff like that.
