"A Beautiful Friendship (1) (Star Kingdom)" by David Weber
https://www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Friendship-Star-Kingdom-Weber/dp/1451638264/

Book number one of a three book young adult space opera series. This
series is part of the huge Honorverse series of books, probably
approaching thirty books now. I read the well printed and well bound
trade paperback published by Baen in 2012 that I bought new from Amazon
since all my books are packed away in the garage. I did go in the
garage and find books two and three this morning, only the second box I
looked in: Weber, Williamson, Williams, etc. I will be rereading those
books next.

Twelve year old Stephanie Harrington has just moved to a new planet,
Sphinx, in the Manticore binary star system. There are barely two
million people living on Sphinx, in part due to the harsh five Terran
year cycle around Manticore-A, and the deadly plagues that Stephanie's
mother was brought in to help cure. The Harringtons live far out of the
nearest town and grow a lot of their food in a greenhouse. Somebody is
stealing their celery and Stephanie aims to find them out.

The animals on Sphinx are quite unusual, all of them are hexapods, six
legged. The number one predator on the planet is a very dangerous five
meter long feline named the hexapuma. Other predators such as the three
meter near bear exist also. And many uncatalogued mammals also.

My review from 2013: "Book number one of a new series of two books set
in the Honorverse. I suspect that this will not just be a mini-series
of two books but will go more. I do note that Mr. Weber has a co-author
on the sequel.
I believe that this is David Weber's first young adult novel? In any
case, I loved it. This novel is an expansion of an old novella by DW of
the same name. And it can be considered a prequel to the excellent
Honor Harrington series."

The author has an excellent website at:
http://www.davidweber.net/

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars (596 reviews)

The closing line of the movie Casablanca was "This could be the start
of a beautiful friendship", as Rick Blaine, played by Humphrey Bogart,
walks off into the night with a French resistance fighter.

Dude, I was born in 1960. 18 years after Casablanca was released in
1942. In fact, I have never watched the movie all the way through.

I have no idea if David Weber meant that when he titled the book. If,
Baen allowed him to title the book. He and I are friends on Facebook,
maybe I will ask him. I usually just put snarky comments on his puns
though like his other 700+ friends.

Presumably, Quadlibloc recognized the title as part of the last
line of the film.

I was born in 1942. I've seen it, though not recently; it's a
trove of quotable quotes.

Well, is quoting the last line of a rather well-known, though
elderly, film punny?

I was born well after 1942, although not so long after it as Lynn;
but because it is, as you say, "a trove of quotable quotes", including
some that are misquoted ("Play it again, Sam", from "Play it, Sam. If
she can stand it, so can I".) it has entered popular culture quite
firmly.

"We'll always have Paris", "round up the usual suspects" are two
other examples.

I may indeed have watched it in its entirety off a DVD at one point.
I even watched all of _Citizen Kane_ as well.

Depends on whether they're into movies or not. It's #3 on the AFI top
100, #5 on the IMDB top 100, and #8 on the Rottentomatoes top 100. So
anybody who professes to have a serious interest in film has likely
seen it.

Thread drift time!

Ronald Reagan was considered for the part of Rick. I recall one story in
which his rejection subconsciously drove him to seek residence in
another 'Casa Blanca'; the White House.

The movie is based on a then-unproduced play, 'Everybody comes to Ricks',
and 'As Time Goes By' goes back to a 1932 stage comedy 'Everybody's Welcome'.

Most people have only heard the latter part of the lyrics. The song has a
prolog, whichi (ObSF) references Einstein and the Theory of Relativity.

This YT video includes it: https://youtu.be/KqkYyG4MpnI?t=60

It's Jimmy Durante; I've been unable to find a more melodious version
in a quick search.

More thread drift for "anybody who professes to have a serious
interest in film".

"Singing In The Rain" is back in theaters this week. As perfect in its
own way as Casa Blanca.

Whereas I, while similarly aged, watch it annually. Many phrases
from that film were in the common vernacular through most of my
youth,

"Here's Looking at You Kid"
"Of all the Gin Joints, In all the Towns, In all the World, she walks into mine.
"We'll always have Paris"
"Round up the Usual Suspects"
"I think this is the beginning of a Beautiful Friendship"

Another, often quoted, was actually never in the movie:

"Play it again, Sam".

I'm told that that Jackie Chan says that that movie was one of the
major influences on his choice of career.

It may be sly. I wonder.

In context in <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casablanca_(film)>
Renault, "the unabashedly corrupt prefect of police" in
Casablanca, the great city of colonial French Morocco -
nominally not under German occupation, but not looking
very different from somewhere that is - has suddenly
developed patriotism - as has Rick, who has just shot a Nazi
officer in front of Renault - and has proposed that he and
Rick should escape to, and probably as, "Free French"
opposition to Germany. A previous wager of 10,00 francs
also was mentioned. Until now, Rick has been a shady
local businessman, from America, and they have been
opponents. The prediction of beautiful friendship is
rather sudden. But they are literally leaving behind
their differences.

How much of the novel plot described here
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Beautiful_Friendship_(novel)>
Is also the previous short story version with the same title,
I do not know, but I will guess that the "new" material
starts at "Two years later". Up until then, all that's happened
is that Stephanie Harrington has encountered treecats.
However, protection of treecats from exploitation or
scientific investigation follows, and I think is foreknown
to most readers. Then, the teamwork therein may be being
compared to the relationship of Renault and Rick.

Or it may be just a lovely cross-species friendship -
in the David Weber book, not in _Casablanca_.

Indeed. I can't get to theaters, but I have the DVD.

Further drift: A work-related convention once sent me to Reno or
Las Vegas or one of the other places that were built, as the
Chancellor of UN Reno told us, "to get some of our silver back."

We also saw a show featuring many chorus girls with their boobs
showing, plus Donald O'Connor, fully dressed--just as well, for
he had put on a lot of weight since the '50s; he did not attempt
to dance, just told off-color jokes. I forget now why I didn't
just get up and walk out.

And they are hard to find; I've skipped over results that seemed only minimally
likely to match, and I have found another:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdCf_iH3sLI

this one is sung by a barbershop quartet, which makes them likelier to
be using the full lyrics, which they did.
