There _was_ a real press release from Warner Brothers which mentioned him
as being considered for the part. So they _claimed_ he was their choice, and
yet it turns out they weren't telling the truth, because Ronald Reagan was
overseas, fighting in World War II, and therefore not available - and the movie
was being made by an independent producer, meaning the studio didn't have
input into casting.

Interesting. It's understandable people might have been fooled.

However, that doesn't mean it's an urban legend that someone wrote an
alternate-history story based on the legend.

IIRC, the alt-history had RR getting the role of Rick, and never feeling the
need to enter politics.

I think this was published sometime in his frist term. The author clearly thought
this would be better world.

As well as (at least) _The Asteroid Queen_ and _In the Hall of the
Mountain King_, by the usual suspects.

Which leads to something about which I've wondered about (but not too
seriously) for several years: Are there other similar pastiches in
the Man-Kzin Wars series? I've only read the first few books in that
series before I got turned off by it (esp the human woman being groomed
as a kzinrette).

If there are more of these Bogie pastiches, in which books are they to
be found? (I'd rather not have any more detail than that, so that I can
have the pleasure of discovery.)

I don't understand it either though no question I consider part of my
job as a parent (and my kids are now in the 30-35 age group) to expose
my kids to cultural icons they might not have heard of.

For instance shortly before the pandemic a local indie theater did a
double bill of Cabaret and the Great Dictator. I also introduced her
to Triumph of the Will. On the other hand she introduced ME to Birth
of a Nation (which I knew about but had never seen) and remember that
she told me of her shock when she realized who the heroes of that
piece were!

The only other Stirling in the Man-Kzin Wars anthologies is "The Man Who
Would Be Kzin", co-written with Greg Bear, in _Man-Kzin Wars IV_ - I
have no idea if it is a Bogart pastiche (or any other movie). Jerry
Pournelle has no other entries in the _Man-Kzin Wars series.

By the way, the novella "The Children's Hour" in _Man-Kzin Wars II_ was
later expanded into a novel as _The Children's Hour_ (I can't remember
the differences off hand).

If it _was_, it wouldn't be a Humphrey Bogart movie. Try Sean Connery and
Michael Caine.

Since John didn't say, its 'The Man Who Would Be King', based on the
Kipling novella of the same name.

Caine and Connery in their prime. Great adventure yarn, set in the Hindu
Kush during the late British Empire. Totally recommend.

ISTR reading somewhere that Huston had tried to get it off the ground
for decades, and his original casting choices were Bogart and Gable.

I read that a very long time ago and remember nothing of it. However, I
would guess that it's based on:

_The Man Who Would Be King_ was originally a story by Rudyard Kipling of
British adventurers in Afghanistan. IIRC, Dorothy's favourite Kipling
was _Kim_ bit I preferred _The Man Who Would Be King_ and recommend it.
(It is quite short so a small investment of time.)

A live show? That sounds like his part in the film of "Ragtime." He
sings "I Could Love a Million Girls" with chorus girls "of all nations"
dancing around him.

I was in college in the mid-70s and "Casablanca" would get shown
in various venues: the uni film society series in the student union
ballroom; the campus movie theater which doubled as a first run house
at night and a lecture hall in the daytime; also the local repertory film
house, part of the Landmark chain. Woody Allen's play (1969) and
film (1972) "Play It Again, Sam" had brought the Bogart film to the
attention of younger folk.

Folks younger than I am may know the Simpsons references.

Donald O'Connor did play "Evelyn's dance instructor" in the film, but
I don't remember that scene.

Are you certain it wasn't in ... some other film? Or a TV series? He
was in a /lot/ of TV series.

There was actually a number in "Singing In The Rain" like that, but
O'Connor was not the male lead for that. (Neither was Kelly, it
was presented as a musical filming on a new soundstage that the cast
walked through for plot reasons).

When I was at USC in the early 80s, the Russell House student union would
show movies 7 nights a week with the 5 weekday nights being classics.
I was lucky enough to see many movies I would never have otherwise.
Casablanca, Lost Horizon, Lolita, The Big Sleep, The Roaring 20s,
The Maltese Falcon, Sahara, The Pound, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vahishes,
Rear Window, Psycho, The Best Years Of Our Lives, Wings, The Cameraman,
Beau Geste, Robin Hood, Captain Blood, Kiss Me Deadly, The Repo Man,
Forbidden Planet, Citizen Kane, The Third Man, The African Queen,
The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, Zardoz, The Lion In Winter, 12 Angry Men,
The Philadelphia Story, The Bells Of St. Mary, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon,
Stagecoach, High Noon, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, The General, Road To Rio,
Bringing Up Baby, It Happened One Night, & Eraserhead.

Not *all* classics by any means, but I miss those days..

The film is a superb Caine/Connery buddy film, at the height of their powers.

Forman tipping his hat to classic Hollywood?

Donald O’Connor plays Nesbit’s unnamed dance teacher, who sings
“I Could Love a Million Girls”.

I can't find an online clip, but I have found the track from the sountrack:

Ones I remember seeing not on your list: The Adventures of Robin Hood,
The Strawberry Blonde, [I loved Olivia de Havilland]
Growing up near New York City we were served WOR's (Ch9) "Million Dollar
Movie" and WABC's (7) "4:30 Movie" where a lot of these classic films were
shown. Ch 7 liked to give us "John Wayne Week," "Bogart Week" and other
theme weeks. It was nicer to see an uncut version in the theater setting.
CBS-TV ran movies (Late Show, Late Late Show) after the
evening news, but I was sent to bed before they rolled.

At the University of Wisconsin in the early 1970s, there were scores of
film societies. Every student organization that could scrape up a couple
hundred bucks for a pair of projectors (and a cutover switch) set up a
film society. We had our choice of movies every night of the week (well,
not during finals week).

I moved away in 1976, and came back in 2013. All that we have now is an
official UW program:

<https://cinema.wisc.edu/>

(I say "only", but it has a pretty diverse array of films.)

Presumably, the advent of the more-or-less affordable VCR killed off the
student film societies in the mid-1980s.

Actually the "Robin Hood" I mention is the Flynn. I forgot the "The Adventures
Of" part. I tried to show it to my niece and she bailed at the part where
he comes into the feast with a dead deer over his shoulders. Also I
remembered after posting: Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Grand Illusion, All Quiet
On The Western Front, The Inlaws, Rebecca & The Birds.
