Two come to mind:

In _Hyperion_ by Dan Simmons, the Consul lives in a space-dwelling tree.

In _The Integral Trees_ by Larry Niven, people live in space-trees shaped
like integral signs.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Andre Norton did something along
those lines, although the tree would obviously need to be the habitat
of some feline.

Yes, I thought of those. But unfortunately many of the tree stories are by people
James is not a particular fan of. Benford, also.

Aldiss would be an example, but IIRC he has reviewed that.

He did review fifty Nortons recently, but yes, that's a possibility.

Then there's the unauthorized Tolkein sequel "Ents in Spaaace!". Well, the entwives are obviously not on earth!

Yeah... Calweb abruptly dropped shell access; I'd been using eternal-september for Usenet access for a while via trn at my shell account there. I got trn configured on my PC in Linux Subsystem for Windows. But eternal-september rejects my postings. trn's diagnostic for this was less than informative, so I did a manual NNTP transaction via telnet; I get a "441 You are not allowed to post to rec.arts.sf.fandom" response.

Contact form there does not seem to contact anyone. Looks like I'm going to have to find another NNTP server.

Eternal September is working just fine for me. It might be

I'm not having any problems here.

Of course, I'm not messing around with Linix tools running under an
obscure subsystem under Windows.

I'm using a username and password with Agent.

And It Just Works.

Ray replaced at least two of the E-S servers (there are three or four
E-S servers) at a new location about two weeks ago. The new DNS took a
long time to update for some of the ISPs, over a week for AT&T. One guy
was continuously complaining at
news://news.eternal-september.org/eternal-september.support and
eventually found that he had hardwired the E-S reader and database IPv4
addresses into his localhosts file. Once he removed those, his problems
went away.
