I caught the end of a news item away or so ago, in which it said that a
meteorite has landed and the authorities know the rough area. They are
asking people to look for bits of it, but not to pick it up with their hands
to stop cross contamination. It apparently will look black and metallic.
Of course the conspiracy folk had a field day with that, Ah, its part of
some secret weapon and they want it back to Its alien and hence they want to
get their hands on it etc.

Its in the UK, but never heard the actual location.
Brian

Meteorites, it is believed, were the source of Iron in early times,
believed magical.

There is a story at the moment, that there is a ginormous comet heading
towards earth, and it can be diverted away if NASA is given gazillions
of dollars,

You mean this story;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-61147230

There are always conspiracy theorists. For them a complicated story is
better than the simple truth.

Also this story:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-61097826

Quote "But not to worry. The closest it will get is one billion miles
away from the Sun, and that won't be until 2031."

So not exactly heading towards earth.

No mention of a request for 1 extra dollar.

Not a problem, just wait for the Chinese bid it will be much lower,
because they'll want to be sure to undercut SpaceX.

One of them;

https://in.mashable.com/science/30612/the-world-is-coming-to-an-end-in-2031-nasa-reports-huge-comet-heading-towards-earth-with-lightning-s

I usually do not read to the last of such silly stories, so I had to go
back to find a reference. The original source of such things are a bruce
willis movie, I think, in which Bruce lays down his life to save Earth.

Just outside of Saturn's orbit so. Pity there's no chance of a
tail there, it would produce a monster of a tail if it got warm enough.

Seen by a friend travelling above Hanley in the Potteries, now believed
to have landed not far North of Shrewsbury. In an area where they grow a
lot of oilseed rape and maize, so searching the fields won't be an
option until after the harvest.

Unless there were two of 'em...

Reminds me of a story that a young friend told me.

He had joined the Police (Garda) and had done the training, and was sent
to his posting, His first job was to go to where there had been a
motorcycle accident and to look for one of the riders legs, that had
been detatched and was suspected to have finished up in a field of corn.
He found it by smell.

That is sort of true, but the comet is already beginning to melt even at
huge distances out in the outer solar system. Because of this effect the
actual path it will take is still very sketchy, however it is believed that
the gravity from at least one nearby planet will mean it comes nowhere near
us, it may end up like the one in the 1990s Shoemaker-Levy and break up
over Jupiter or similar. It may not survive the loop around the sun.
However because its so far away still, scientists would love to get a
sample since its unusual as its a pristine comet never been seen heading
toward the sun before.

Well I heard it from a magazine, probably New Scientist.
However the Nasa bit is not confirmed other than the science folk want
somebody to go go and look at it. I don't think there is anything up there
that could be retasked for when it gets nearer either.
Nasa is already behind with the Manned moon mission preparation due to the
fact they have not flight tested their hard ware yet and I doubt there is an
appetite to get another project started in short order.

Scientists hunt for Easter egg sized meteorite in Shropshire
bbc.co.uk
Scientists appeal to trace meteorite near Shrewsbury
The UK Fireball Alliance believes the space rock landed in Shropshire last
week.
9:20 AM Apr 19, 2022

Was all I managed to find, maybe the powers that be have removed the story,
more fodder for the fake news brigade. We were of course in the middle of a
known meteor shower and it is believed to be the old tail of a comet.

Yes I can imagine that, but his one supposes fresh in will have any sharp
edges rounded or if a fragment the appearance inside will be different to
the outside. I handled one at a local museum, but it apparently dates from
the first world war, but was surprisingly heavy for its size and seemed to
have been magnetised as demonstrated by a compass.

They do apparently come in all sorts of forms, however the lady told me at
the time, these metallic ones are very common though. Brian

Easter-egg-sized? Nobody uses "Easter Egg Sized" as a measure of
comparison so how on earth are people to know what that means?

Why can't they just say 4x10^-7 Olympic-sized swimming pools then we'd
all understand.

Lumps of metal have the best chance of making it down reasonably
intact, snowballs the worst, CCs not much better.

< top post >

Magnetite is another common meteor-wrong.
I found an interesting, magnetic specimen last year -
- that I was pretty sure must be meteorite -
only to bring it home and cut into it and discover ...
... magnetite ..
My link below has some good ID info and there are
many other web resources with photos <sorry Brian > and
little tests that can be done.
The one true sample that I received as a gift from my
brother is a ~ 1 inch square slice that looks like a
mixed-up metal - full of random bits of metals ..

Given how recently man came into being and we developed the ability to view
comets, surely it could have headed towards the sun many times but unseen
by us.

grin.

Onceuponatime, I was walking by a several-story block of flats and
somebody threw an orange at me from a high window. Hell of a *splat*,
a few feet away from mine. Grapefruits From Outer Space would be scary.
And messy.
