I've followed your posts with much interest. I also use Thunderbird and
have also been noticing all kinds of 'misbehaviour with it recently;
you are not the only one who has been effected. Really irritating at

Considered? Yes, Briefly, but as I've been using it for years and it
doesn't generally cause any problems it's not something that I think is
causing the problem in this case, given it's so intermittent etc.

I haven’t used Tbird for ages but there is a setting for how long to wait
until it automatically looks for new messages on the server for the
subscribed groups ( + all groups list update).

No, as I found when I first experienced / Googled the problem. One of
the most common solutions was that a tmp folder hits an upper limit of
files and needs manual purging but I think that was causing a complete
failure not a random one? I couldn't even find the folder specified so

Yes, especially so when it has been both fast and rock solid X platform
(I have used it on OSX but mostly Windows and Linux).

So far <touching wood> it hasn't had an issue sending though
individual.net but I have seen a lack response when say checking for new
messages once. This typically seems to happen if I've left TB in the
background for a while then gone back to it?

That's good to hear. I've been wondering if BlockNews has been
responsible for, especially, a failure to SEND messages. They invariable

Erm, because I was originally asking about an iPhone 11 so I thought
that would be pertinent? Then there was a bit of thread drift ... ;-)

It has been suggested elsewhere that Mozilla can be somewhat lacking in
that area? ;-(

I don't know if it was you or someone else here who suggested it but
flicking between newsgroups seems to wake up any hang-ups, certainly re
reading the group.

It was strange when I was using ES. It could let me post several
messages on the trot and then (randomly so far) wouldn't let me post at
all, even after closing TB and leaving it closed for a while etc.

Setting for the polling under account settings for your news server. I
tested after your posting. Polling works perfectly when left open alone.
There were quite a lot of news postings after a while. On Solani as well
as on Eternal-September.

The polling is set to happen here every 5 minutes and that is exactly
what happens.

If you think an antivirus-protection is necessary use the Defender of
Windows. Never work as admin with elevated rights.

That is what I even implement on my Macs and on my Linux-machines. Admin
only to administer the system.

I think I might try turning that off and poll manually, that way I might
be more inclined to note new messages and not miss them as I did here. ;-(

Been doing that for a good few years now ... ?

Since I left Windows in 2006 in my private domain.

Working as admin creates a slight Kamikaze-feeling. Even on Linux.

Ignoring the giving of hostiles a raised level of power, I see my system
to be mine so don't want to constantly have to prove to it, that it's
me, it's creator, just to be able to manage it.

To me, running as admin is like using a sharp knife over a blunt one
where it's generally safer and more efficient (than the blunt one) but
does require you are careful and know what you are doing. ;-)

Your choice. Your system. Your data. Your disaster recovery.

Those around me insisting on such a philosophy cannot count on my
support in case of problems. It is very simple.

Quite. Unfortunately I only have ~40 years working this way but so far
so good. ;-)
>

Of course, but the only person who is responsible for my systems is me.
For me, the inconvenience of constantly having to authenticate a raised
status isn't worth the additional time consumed.

I use the same mindset when working on my systems as I do doing most
things, 'Think thrice, measure twice, cut once'.

This is why I was checking / questioning stuff with you guys re dealing
with this iPhone11 and Mums data. Anything where I have seen a message
like 'This could lose your data' I may not proceed on or make very sure
I (personally) have a backup of the data or it is confirmed the risks
are very very low.

I am generally risk aware and typically risk adverse when it comes to my
responsibility with other peoples kit / data.

Cheers, T i m

p.s. I turned up at a customer site with the intention of re-installing
their system and confirmed they had a backup of their data. They
presented me with a stack of CD's, all carefully marked up.

I put the first CD into the drive and opened it to find a single file
comprising a link to the file on their PC.

I backed up their data myself ...
