I noticed on my recent continental jaunt that most of the british cars
had a sticker on the back (oval, white background, black letters) with
"UK" on it.

I haven't ever really bothered with them myself, but surely these used
to say "GB"? Has something changed? Is this a brexit thing?

I think it's related to brexit, sort of.

The UK chose to change the international short code from GB to UK.
I guess it now means that people in NI get to use a sticker that has
some relevance to them.

UK made a decision to change so I assume it was done to reassure
NI that despite putting a barrier to trade with the rUK in the Irish
Sea that our overlords still viewed them as part of the same country.

I guess it also meant a load of people had to remove/replace existing
GB stickers that had the council of europe flag included?

Personally I stuck the UK sticker on a piece of plastic taken from a
broken rubbish bin which I attached to the bike using the number
plate screw, I thought the source of the mounting plate was somewhat
fitting and the right level of dignity. That's me off to the re-education
camp I suppose.

I thought GB is a place and UK is a country. The stickers are for
countries.
Am I wrong?

Yes, anoter Brexit benefit apparantly (or just Johnson being Johnson)

They always had an NI one anyway, Scots a SCO and the Welsh a Cymru. No
one gave a toss.

Heck, I had a KZ stuck on the side of the Peg for 8 years.

I got a couple of GB ones for the bike. Hope they last me.

yes

they are International Codes. Some places that are not sovereign nation
states have them

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_vehicle_registration_code#Current_codes

BVI is first on the list not a nation state but several more there

I am still using a GB sticker. It has been on my topbox for over 20 years from
the days when Sea France gave them away with a ferry ticket.

Possibly, so much nonsense is.can't say I've ever been overly concerned about
such stickers, albeit maybe get the EU one just to be awkward.

I still have a couple of old GB euro flag magnetic stickers on the fake camper.

I was chatting with a scouse couple at the wonderful Camping Sainte Claire in Neufchatel en Bray a couple of weeks ago.

They had spent a month mooching around from aire to campsite and the occasional "French Passion" farm, they said they had loads of people come up and chat to them because they thought they were from Ukraine because of the UK stickers.

On my trip through Hungary this year the UK plate on the bike caused a campsite
owner to spend about five minutes trying to communicate with me using Google
Translate and displaying cyrillic characters on their phone.

Not sure whether it was also the cause of needing to register all three bikes,
passports, personal details (home address, DOB) on a government portal. Of
course that could be the way Hungarians deal with any third country.

Please tell me that your initial response involved eels. And a hovercraft.

Exploding nipples would also be acceptable.

And the memories come flooding back :-)

Speaking of a certain M Python, I asked about the following amongst the
sheddies recently with no memories forthcoming. I'm looking for the
pseudo programme announcement sketch where every channel/BBC programme
has something involving sport. The one where there are lines like, "For
those of you wanting a bit of mystery and suspense, there's javelin
throwing on BBC2, followed by fashion in the Wimbledon ladies final" etc etc

Anyone remember/got this? I feel the need to watch it many times as
life has been mirroring fiction too much recently!

Heh. No.

It was at the end of a fairly long and hot day and the only thing standing
between us and a cool beer (and a decent meal- pork shank; if in Germany
a Schweinhaxe) was getting accepted on the campsite and putting the tents
up.

If you're slightly misremembering then what about this from Season2
Episode 8?

>: Here is a preview of some of the programmes you'll be able to see coming shortly on BBC Television. To kick off with there's variety ... (still picture of Peter West and Brian Johnston) Peter West and Brian Johnston star in 'Rain Stopped Play', a whacky new comedy series about the gay exploits of two television cricket commentators (photo of E. W. Swanton) with E. W. Swanton as Aggie the kooky Scots maid. For those of you who don't like variety, there's variety, with Brian Close at the Talk of the Town. (Brian Close in cricket whites on a stage) And of course there'll be sport. The Classics series (engraving of London and caption: 'The Classics') return to BBC 2 with twenty-six episodes of John Galsworthy's 'Snooker My Way' (composite photo of Nyree Dawn Porter holding a snooker cue) with Nyree Dawn Porter repeating her triumph as Joe Davis. And of course there'll be sport. Comedy is not forgotten (Caption: 'Comedy') with Jim Laker (photo of Laker) in 'Thirteen Weeks of Off-spin
Bowling'. Jim plays the zany bachelor bowler in a new series of 'Owzat', with Anneley Brummond-Haye on Mr Softee (photo of same) as his wife. And of course there'll be sport. 'Panorama' will be returning, introduced ('Panorama' caption with photo of Tony Jacklin) as usual by Tony Jacklin, and Lulu (photo of Lulu) will be tackling the Old Man of Hoy (photo of same). And for those of you who prefer drama - there's sport. On 'Show of the Week' Kenneth Wostenholme sings. (still of him, superimposed over Flick Colby Dancers, Pans People, Ono) And for those of you who don't like television there's David Coleman. (picture of him smiling) And of course there'll be sport. But now for something completely different - sport.

Pray Rishi Sunak doesn't win or I think that gets you a couple of weeks
of de-radicalisation in 'the camps'.

Hmmm, interesting. I draw the line at 'gotten'. There must come a point
where you have to use it, no ? eg. "Let's go out tonight and be pissed"
sounds a bit clunky to me.

Agreed, but only because the aim is actually the process (getting
pissed), rather than the end result (being pissed).

"Let's go out tonight and be silly" (can't think of a better
adjective) works fine.

Like you say, process/movement, ie; "Get thee hence to endless night" is
one of my favourite lyrics. I don't know if CdB made it up.

Some things just don't sound right though, such as "I have a luvverly
bunch of coconuts..."

or "I have my beer on the sideboard here..."
