Watford to Brent Cross had a few areas where the puddles were wide and
deep. Not the M1 bit but the A41 had them.

I once had a close encounter with the Fast Cat during a Civil Service
Regatta. We had sailed from Cowes to the Nab Tower (a fort in the middle
of the Eastern Solent) and on the return leg made a course which took us
inshore near Ryde. Unfortunately at that point the wind decided to drop
away completely and we were left at the mercy of the tide which carried
us excruciatingly slowly along the shore and across the end of Ryde
Pier, almost withing touching distance (to the extent where we were
consulting the race rules to see if pushing ourselves hand over hand
along the pier was allowed or not).

Then, just as we came out from the shadow of the pier we realised that
the Cat was just setting off and was bearing down on us about 20m away.
At that point the skipper started the engine, tacked away[1], we
withdrew from the race and to a comfortable distance where we could furl
the sails and motor back to Cowes.

I'm a tad surprised at the actions of your skipper. Surely the proper
thing to do would have been to stand your ground and run up a signal
flag declaring that steam gives way to sail?
