I know this is correct because I remember exactly where I was when I
heard it on the omnibus. I mean, I wasn't on the Clapham omnibus but I
was driving the trusty piss-green Morris Marina (don't laugh, it started
first time every time, handled like a tank and was the only car in
Pembridge Crescent W11 that never got broken into) not that far from
Clapham. Driving down Croxted Road in Dulwich in fact, en route to
Sunday lunch with friends in Elmer's End.

David wasn't responsible for killing Jethro's brother Bob though. That
would be Tom Forrest. Who literally got away with murder.

Ooh no. Nasty hurty things Tasers. And they are meant to be.

Although it doesn't actually say so in Richard Thompson's "I Still
Dream" the stun gun is intended to render the creature instantly
unconscious before slaughter so that it's not aware of what's
happening and - if I may wear a cynical hat for a moment - because a
fearful animal pumps all sorts of hormones and stuff like adrenaline
into its system and the meat doesn't taste as nice.

Well, yes. It was one of those episodes I too remember because I know
where I was at the time. I was listening to the lunchtime repeat in my
workshop on my Bush DAC90 and I remember looking up from my work and
out of the front window onto the quiet street and thinking: Oooooh!

It's true. The best meat comes from smallholders who take their beasts to
the abattoir (preferably small and attached to a butcher shop, as we had in
a nearby village in Kent) in the back of the Land Rover, which they've
travelled in before. B#1 had such a smallholding in Derbyshire, on which he
kept a few sheep (and goats for the milk). His lamb was wonderful! His
vegetarian step daughter would eat his lamb - she didn't regard it as meat.

I wonder if Tony's beef herd is like this. They do have a problem with
abattoir shortage though. Sadly this model wouldn't feed the world. Or
not without some other extensive adjustments.

Does this mean the likes of Ambridge need a gun-toting sharp shooter who
has an honours degree with bars on it in Charm Offensive tactics to travel
the lanes and by-ways to sneak up on animals ready for the slaughter?
