Annoying as I was about to switch from Three but I feared that this

I was just about to make the decision to go spusu having been put off

deters me somewhat.

I have a dual sim phone and GiffGaff remains my main number. It costs
me next to nothing* as I'm a low user but if I know I'm going to be
away from home for a few days or more I'll just buy a bundle.

*Because of Three's terms changes (I had the free Data Reward SIM) and
having not got around to switching from them yet I turned Giffgaff
data on, then had to check an expected computer screen delivery whilst
out and about and for reasons I still don't fully understood got hit
with Gmail using 5.5Mb data, 5.50 which is more than my normal annual
expense! (pre loss of Data Reward free data).

Here's my query:
https://community.giffgaff.com/d/33713016-what-cost-one-penny/

One of the responders said this:
"As to your original question about where the 1p went, if your
phone is set to 4G, and you need to make, or answer, a voice
call, then because giffgaff does not support VoLTE (voice traffic
on 4G), your phone has to switch from 4G to 3G to handle the call
(and back again afterwards). It seems that this process can use a
small amount of data.

I keep my phone set to 3G to avoid this issue (except if I know
I’m going to need to download a lot of data, and I know that
there is good bandwidth on 4G in that location). In congested
areas, you may find that you get faster data speeds on 3G than
4G, due to less congestion."

I didn't think any of the answers were authoritative - or even true.

Elsewhere I read there have been (still are ?) problems with some UK SMS
short code support ?

Certainly one to watch, I'm a bit confused by one of the reviews (only
from January) saying they had migrated from 1P because they wished to
use EE's network (Which 1p do !)

Well spotted thanks - that Trustpilot for you and not knowing what the
site to look like. The Trustnet uk site does have a clear spusu UK
but not so with the Austrian one so I would have had no cause to
search further.

Comments from the Giffgaff community site:

I guess their prices will go up at the end of 2024.

That Spusu for £2.99 a month is tempting me. I need to find an
alternative to Asda Mobile in a hurry. Do I choose if I have a normal
sim or an e-sim or do they choose for me?

Here is my summary for PAYG. I see that I need to update my site for
1pMobile.

Inactivity will cause your account to be terminated and unused credit
lost. To avoid that you must make a chargeable call, text or data
access, or top up within a period set out in the terms and conditions.
That period is usually 180 days. ASDA is 270 days. Shorter exceptions
include White (60 days), Lebara, Lycamobile and 1pMobile (90 days) and
iD (120 days). 1pMobile require that you top up (minimum £10) every 90
days but that credit does not expire.

I too switched from GG to ASDA a year ago.

I keep my old GG sim in my dual-sim phone for use as a backup on a pay
as needed basis when ASDA/Voda coverage is poor. However GG is fairly
expensive for additional PAYG charges (25p/minute, 10p/text and 10p/MB).

Also I much prefer the real live Brits on ASDA's helpline, rather than
GG's online-only crowdsourced help service.

Wifi calling on ASDA is only for a restricted range of handsets.

To be honest, GG (running on O2) may not have much different coverage to
ASDA (on Voda) because I believe they use much the same frequency bands
and share masts. An EE network or Three may have been better for the
spare sim.

"Brits" on the ASDA's helpline? You must have a parallel definition of

On the dozen or so occasions I have called the ASDA helpline over a
couple of years, every call has been answered by a native English speaker.

Maybe your account has been specially singled out to get diverted to
India. :) Be nice to them next time.

I'm not defending 1p as I'm also 'affected'; however it's an increase in
the minimum annual top-up which you could e.g. use as a mobile payment
to a charity on a short-code text number* (in lieu of you paying cash or
via CC) since the money is there in your account as pre-pay credit.

Which is preferable, in my view, to one of the networks taking the
CPI+X% increase outright, monthly, on a contract via a DD.

*BTW, the one time I used a short code on 1p mobile I was charged 1p
which refreshingly is not like where you have inclusive texts on a
contract and they typically charge 15p or more for a short-code text.

I eventually went for the £4.50 a month. For the £2.90, you have to
follow an affiliate link from any of these 3rd party websites, such as this:

Not according to the link I posted in reply to Chris in Makati. It goes
straight to the Spusu site.

The only thing that stopping me moving to them is the potential issue with
SMS short codes, the rest of the deal looks very good.

That's just where the Moneysupermarket click-through link takes you. MSM
will get some commission for using that link.

You could just go here if you don't want them to get commission:
https://www.spusu.co.uk/spusu1special

(curiously, if you click on 'SIM-only deals' the offer then shows in the
list, which it didn't yesterday before I clicked on the above link. I tried
a fresh browser without the affiliate tracking and it still appears)

That it support VoLTE, wifi calling and EU roaming is rather handy, compared
with some of the PAYG bundle plans.
