Sorry, but I would not stump up £32,000 for that derelict. I can
understand removing the radio but, from that angle, it looks like they
completely stripped the entire unit into a carcass.

I realise that there is a difference between the item's actual cost
compared to market value, but I have trouble seeing it go for that number.

Yes, it's pretty much an empty shell AFAICT. Which is fine if that's what
suits your purposes, I guess?

H'mm:

This carriage is used and was used on the Island as a donor vehicle in
later life so will require a full restoration. We can arrange restoration
at cost, to suit requirements.

To be clear, this carriage will need extensive work - from a brief
inspection it is clear that many interior and exterior fittings need
attention and replacing/sourcing - some of which are:

Seat cushions

Light covers

Electrical equipment

Door buttons

Floor vinyl

Some windows

Drivers seat/controls

Flip down seats

Minor interior panels

Items that need work/are missing are not limited to the above list - this
is a guide from initial inspection of the vehicle.

It's an unfortunate property of many ebay "collect in person" listings
that they end up with an auto-filled seller's business location, and not
the item's physical location.

For example, I once bought a bed from an address in Loughborough, but it
turned out to be at the proprietor's house on the edge of Leicester (and
a stone's throw from the Great Central Railway). Another time a person
was doing a house clearance of their mother's bungalow, which was
no-where near their home address on their eBay account.

A desk which eBay said was in "Cambridge" turned out to be in an
industrial unit next to Whittleford Station. That's because eBay
"rounds" the coarse location quite liberally. OK, only 7miles out, but
it doubled my journey (compared to central Cambridge).

An experienced seller will go to some lengths to explain all this in the
listing, but novices abound.

The seller complains: "Re-Listed due to someone not actually wanting to
buy the item. Please only commit to buy if you actually want to purchase
this item... It was a right headache sorting this mess out."

And that could have been due to confusion over the location or delivery
arrangements.

"This carriage is used and was used on the Island as a donor vehicle in
later life so will require a full restoration. We can arrange
restoration at cost, to suit requirements.

To be clear, this carriage will need extensive work - from a brief
inspection it is clear that many interior and exterior fittings need
attention and replacing/sourcing - some of which are:

Seat cushions
Light covers
Electrical equipment
Door buttons
Floor vinyl
Some windows
Drivers seat/controls
Flip down seats
Minor interior panels"

People have successfully restored things in far worse shape.

Someone is either taking the piss or clueless. No one is going to pay 32K for
that heap. If he'd set a more realistic price , say 5K , he might have got
a buyer but as it is he'll be getting scrap value only which I imagine will
be a few grand at best (apparently iron is about 100 quid a ton atm) unless he
can flog some parts.

I see that it says:

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer

Perhaps he wanted to see if he could find someone interested in
restoring it before selling for scrap.

I'd be amazed if there was someone mug enough to pay 32K for it, but there's
always a fool with a lot of money somewhere.

He doesn't appear to have sold it via eBay, but it may have been sold
directly. What intrigued me was that he apparently had three carriages
available.

I'm wondering if he was just acting as an agent for whoever actually owns
the rust-heaps, who's now sold them themselves?

I think a lot of the stripping had been done before the rest of the fleet
was withdrawn, this unit was a spares donor I think. The rest will have
been done to remove/check for asbestos.

Two or three generations ago now.

According to the stock list there are only four 483 cars that haven't been
found new homes, so it suggests they are the ebay ones. There are other
bits turning up:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265178663211
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254998440116
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373612451556
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373612458797
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124749771590
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254998437719

which suggests car 129 (ex 483009) has already been scrapped at Booth's in
April 2021.

In the background of this pic:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/PXsAAOSwbCVgmrCw/s-l1600.jpg
I think there's some ex-GA class 321 stock. Apparently some 321s went for
scrap at Newport and Rotherham, so perhaps the photo is from Booth's
Rotherham?

Makes sense.

I notice there's another 483 car, in better condition, parked behind it. That's presumably one of the three that was
(briefly) offered on eBay?

Why do railway vehicles have to be cut up somewhere like Booths especially
if they're heading there on a low loader? A blowtoach is a blowtorch, why
can't any reasonably sized scrap dealer do it?

Now I'm picturing a Eurostar going into a cube crusher and a PPM coming out.

Whatever did come out would probably look somewhat more stylish and modern
than a PPM!

I saw that earlier, but didn't look at the stuff in the background.

Interesting. So someone has moved them from IOW to the mainland already
(if not to London)? Or are they saying it's "like the ones from the IOW"
but not in fact any of the ones which ended up on the IOW.

Handling of hazardous materials eg asbestos, perhaps? The bigger players
might have invested in equipment to deal with stuff like that, which the
smaller ones won't have done, therefore they win the tenders?

Well the one in that image is very definitely one which was on the IoW and
very definitely no longer is on the IoW…

I get the impression that they've all been removed from the Island Line,
with one (or two?) units to the Steam Railway, and the rest to the
mainland. One (or two?) have gone to the EOR, and the rest to the
scrapyard, where one car has been scrapped so far.

The remaining cars in the scrapyard presumably have a short stay of
execution, while bidders offering more than scrap value have a last
opportunity to acquire them. But these will all be 'Christmas trees' in
poor condition, with the Steam Railway and EOR having taken the ones that
are nearest to being runners.
