I was wondering if Glamorgan's 672-6d might be the highest score ever
made in September. I don't suppose Rikki Clarke was too impressed by
having to bowl on such a pitch in his final first-class match.

The ACS records page lists ~90 innings of 672 or more in England,
including Glamorgan's total in the current match.

By coincidence the previous 672+ total was also at the Oval as
recently as April - Surrey 672/8d vs Leics.

Lancashire's 781 was made on the 4th and 5th September 2003.

So Glamorgan's total isn't even the highest _this_ September!

Nor is it the highest, or even their highest, that late in September, as
their 2009 total was made from the 24th to the 26th.

But until recent years, not that much f-c cricket has been played in
England in September - and pretty much none abroad - which was why I
wondered if it might be a record for the month.

Thanks. Unfortunately that table only gives the year, not the month, so
there's no quick and easy way of checking.

Thanks. It seems highly likely that that is the record for the month,
then.

It's interesting that they were all in the current millennium. I suppose
the introduction of 4-day county matches in the 1990s would have led to
far for really big scores, combined with far more September matches than
used to be the case. It's surprising how many instances were in the last
10 days of the month.

I ought to have remembered the two matches where Surrey scored 680+, but
I confess I don't. I wonder if Glamorgan had any thoughts of revenge for
2001 when they amassed their current total.

The dip in June is a little surprising.

Thanks, Brian. That's a brilliantly comprehensive answer to my question.

i think Overton took 5-58 - that must be 1 ofthe best figures in a 600+ total!
if only he had done that in the test match. clearly the surrey bowling attack
is a bit understrength ATM. What was the highest total ever made against
their great winning side in the 50s? [probably when bedser L&L were on
test duty]

I think you are getting your Overtons mixed up. The Overton who took
5-58 was Craig playing for Somerset, in Warwickshire's first innings of
367. He is also the Overton who played in some of this summer's Tests.
His brother Jamie, who now plays for Surrey, is I think injured and not
playing for Surrey in the current (strictly now just completed) match
against Glamorgan.

> clearly the surrey bowling attack is a bit understrength ATM.

Yep. They are missing both Currans for a start, though on that pitch
(possibly the best batting pitch since the Surrey v Lancs match in 1990,
going by the scores) I doubt that their presence would have made much
difference.

That would take an awful lot of digging to unearth.

Thanks. That 1990 match against Lancashire, when Surrey made 707-9d and
Lancs 863 including a triple ton by Neil Fairbrother, may have been the
last time there was an Oval pitch with less in it for the bowlers.

Interesting that there were no instances between 1909 and 1947 - even
though Surrey had a very strong batting line-up for much of that time -
or between 1947 and 1990.

Surrey only conceded 500+ twice in the whole of the 1950s.

537-5d West Indians v Surrey Kennington Oval, Kennington 1950
529-9 Nhants v Surrey Kennington Oval, Kennington 1958

Weekes 232, Walcott 128, Rae 96 - Bedser & Laker were playing.
Surrey 193 & 391, drawn.

Surrey 378/5d - Nhants 529/9 Subba Row 300, Lightfoot 119 - drawn

4/5/6 June - L&L played in 1st Test started 5 June. Bedser didn't
play any f/c matches until 25 June vs Cambridge, his 1st CC match was
July 5. His last Test was in 1955.

Even given the weakened Surrey attack, Subba Row's must have been quite
some innings. I believe that earlier in his career he had been on the
Surrey staff, so the innings must have given him particular pleasure.

He batted for 9h 42m, and hit 42 fours.

Surrey have conceeded 500+ 94 times:

1860s 2

1880s 1
1890s 3
1900s 10
1910s 4
1920s 9
1930s 14
1940s 4
1950s 2

1990s 9
2000s 21
2010s 14
2020s 1

55 of those were at The Oval.

yeah i got it all jumbled, i blame it on reading the scores off my phone
while on holiday, or too much sun never known such a warm sunny september,
just sun day after day.

anyway i notice [i hope correctly] that all 11 of glamorgan had a bowl
including keeper cooke. i think that happened once in a test too.

also popes highest score even in a dead match on an obviously dead wkt
made sure surrey wernt embarrased, and clearly foakes is fit again as he
kept for 177 overs. During the oval test they said pope averaged 100+
at the oval, so he clearly has maintained or improved that. his FC career
average is 50 from 56 games, but i wonder what it is without the runs
hes made at the oval.

thanks. in both games they bowled about the same no of overs in 3 days
as they did in 4 days in 2021. also the other bedser bowled 60 overs
0 for 65. dont think that would happen nowadays.

Thanks. The two in the 1860s came as a surprise, considering how poor
pitches generally were back then.

It's happened 4 times in Tests ...

https://stats.acscricket.com/Records/Test/Overall/Team/Most_Bowlers_in_an_Innings.html

.... and that was the 62nd time in FC cricket. There was also one
occurrence of 12 in a 12-a-side match in 1880, when the Gentlemen of
England's wicket-keeper, Alexander Webbe, was actually the 4th bowler
used (although he seldom kept wicket after that season, and ended up
with 109 FC wickets in 371 matches).

The first instance of 11 bowlers in an innings was also in a 12-a-side
match.

https://stats.acscricket.com/Records/First_Class/Overall/Team/Most_Bowlers_in_an_Innings.html

I suppose, with concussion substitutes, it would be possible for 12 or
more bowlers to be used in an innings these days.

Both of those were by England though: 503 in 1862 (Thomas Hayward, uncle
of his more famous namesake, 117), and 521 in 1866 (WG Grace 224*).

Possibly more surprising was that they went 3 consecutive complete
decades without conceding 500, a run that was ended by the famous match
in 1990 when Lancashire made 863 (Fairbrother 366) in reply to Surrey's
707-9 dec.

Since the question came up, I did notice, when looking up Lancashire's
781 v Warwickshire in 2003, that Mark Wagh took 7-222, which were his
best FC bowling figures.

By the end, the first 13 had all reached 30 (36 in fact). The only one
who didn't was Rikki Clarke, who finished on 12 not out.
