So every dismissed batsman reached 30. That record could stand for a
long time (ignoring matches heavily curtailed by rain so that only a few
batsmen reached the crease). Perhaps Surrey should have claimed some of
the last hour to allow Clarke also to reach the landmark. :) Though the
umpires might have given them short shrift had they tried it. There's a
sort of precedent, though, as I believe the umpires allowed Surrey to
take part of the extra half-hour (as it then was), with the consent of
the opposition, to allow John Edrich to get the last few runs to
complete his hundredth f-c century, back in 1976 or thereabouts.

Pitches in the 1960s were poor, but it's surprising that it never
happened in the 1970s or 1980s. Perhaps the decline in over rates,
coupled with matches still being of three days, meant that teams felt
that they didn't have enough time to bat on till they'd reached 500 if
they wanted a good chance of winning the match.

He had already had 47 minutes, and faced 51 balls, so it's not as if he
hadn't had the chance. At that rate, he would have taken more than the hour.
